Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 15 minutes
Disconnect battery positive terminal and wait 15 minutes
Use Torx to get airbag bolts out at the back of the steering wheel
Disconnect airbag wiring
Remove airbag and put it on a surface with the front facing up
Use a high quality hex bit with a breaker bar to remove screw holding steering wheel. Make sure you use the exact size, otherwise you risk rounding out the screw at which point you'll be f'd and you'll be kicking & cursing at yourself for a whole week.

I would add one more thing. Wear work clothes and consider putting on a N95 mask when you do this job. There will be alot of carbon dust when you remove the wheel (from the brushes) and it is very fine so potentially dangerous to inhale.

Torx wrench is a T-27. The bolt holding the wheel on is a 10mm allen. Remove the airbag screws, disconnect the plug. You have to pull firmly. Place the steering wheel in the lock position to remove the center bolt. Before you pull the wheel, mark the position with a sharpie. It will be easy breezy if you use a 1/2" drive and breaker bar. All of this takes about 20 min.

Once you've cleaned the contact ring and contact brushes, don't use dielectric grease when you put everything back together.

Very easy to do.
As everyone said above...and be very careful to NOT let the coiled wire come out of the housing! It's wound in there like a watch spring and you will spend more time putting that back together than I care to admit. I read the links about steering wheel removal and did not read about this. As it turned out it was the most important bit of information that wasn't there.
I also wrapped a long breaker bar with cloths and used it to prevent the steering wheel from turning by lodging it against the wheel and door opening.

Clock springs are on 1996 & newer models.
Some say late 94 & 95 had it but I didn't have one
on my 94 E420, it had the brushes.

95 & prior has normal carbon brush's & contact rings
like the horn has for years

So you say carbon brush's? any pic's of the wheel off? after 230k the brush's must be pretty worn, there's a horrible squeaking when I turn the wheel side to side, the srs light comes on if I turn the wheel it go's off,at least it seems to,I read somewhere the seat belt locks can trigger the srs light, anyways what do I do if I get the wheel off and the brush's are wasted? are there replacements?
