Help.. I'm removing my fuel tank from my 76 to clean it,, the instructions says that I have to remove my hard top to get to the bolts holding my expansion tank in. is this right?? or can you get the main tank out without removing the expansion tank?? I've never had my top off, so I'm a little spooked..can any of you all give me any advise?? thanks..

The tank bolts are in the trunk. You take the dozens of bolts out of the steel cover from over the tank. The tank has 4 mounting bolts. The expansion tank has 3 screws, but sadly two are in the top well! The strainer assembly HAS to come out of the bottom of the tank prior to getting the tank out. That's the biggest bitch. Mine came out super easy. Some don't. The hole is usually displaced slightly that makes getting a wrench on it easily. The wiring is accessed thru a round plug in the top well center. :D

There are a couple of screws/bolts for the expansion tank that have to be removed from inside the soft top well. Now is as good time as any to learn how to remove the hard top and see what your soft top looks like.

Don't take my word. Look in the manual. There are two big arrows pointing to the screws in the top well that hold the expansion tank.

Our posts crossed. You are correct - the top needs to come off to remove the expansion tank. That's why I deleted my post.

Cheers,

I noticed they crossed. My comment was not directed at you. As you stated it has been a long time since you did one. It was more general as tdoriot posted the same info.

They are VERY heavy. (2 people or 1 gorilla) Put something on the trunk at the center of the rear window to stop the pin on the hardtop gouging your paint. Actually preferable to cover the whole trunk with a blanket or similar incase you let it drop while removing

Not necessarily...

I guess I should clarify, a "human helper" not necessarily required, but certainly something is needed to help.
Did you ever modify the front arms?

No, I've decided that they're fine. Obviously if I were to do another one I'd change that part of the design.

This works so well - the other day we had upper-80s and decided to pop the top for a drive and it took all of 3 minutes to remove. Same when I got back to put it back on. Really keeps wear and tear and UV damage on the soft top to a minimum.
