I found a cheap brand and ordered 5. I only needed 4 but I left myself some room if I break something.

I did the hone with AN-30 silicon paste. There wasn't as much difference before and after... well, not as much as I had hoped, but I followed the procedure and honed for only 90 seconds. It did take a bunch of the glaze off (which is what it is supposed to do) but not all of it. I'm going to call it good enough.

Before.

I spent an hour or so trying to clean off the AN-30 Silicon honing paste that got everyplace and ultimately decided I couldn't be sure I got it all, especially in those hard to reach areas... so I loaded the block in my truck and off I went to the machine shop. I told the owner my concerns about the AN-30 and he agreed to put the block into his washing machine (like a dishwasher for blocks) and do an extra wash and rinse and then an additional wash and rinse in soap and water before drying. I'm hoping the block comes back spotless. I'll post pictures.

The last time I put rings on a piston it was in my 1955 Chevy 265. I gotta believe things have changed and judging by the fact that I have been unable to remove the old rings from my 380 without breaking them, I must assume my method requires a little tweaking. Any tips on how to replace the rings on a Mercedes piston before I start breaking rings that have become as rare as hens teeth?

Are you using a ring expander? Definitely needed for install. Do you have a groove cleaner/scrapper?

Yes I have a ring expanded but no I haven't seen my grove cleaner in 40 years. I'll need to buy a new one.

Picked up the block from cleaning today. I was expecting it to look better than it does... not that it looks bad... it's just that I was hoping for it to be cleaner. I had to clean several areas with brake cleaner, where there was grime that wasn't removed. Not terrible... just not perfect.

The crank is back in the block with all new main bearings. All bolts torqued to 37 ft/lbs. (50 nm). The crank she spins so nice and smooth.

Received a notification that my second source of piston rings was delivered via. USPS at 12:00 noon yesterday. Only trouble is I never got them. And to add to the misery, Pelican parts, (my third source) sent me an email notifying me that they're having a little trouble locating a supply. Naturally they're very sorry for the inconviemince.

So here I sit, ready to put this beast back together, and I only have enough ring sets for four pistons. Grrrr.

This happens a lot with USPS causing us to go ask neighbors if they got our packages. The USPS packages usually show up in the next day’s mail, which I assume is Monday for you.

The supplier I ordered the rings from contacted me this morning and said that the carrier has misplaced the shipment. They refunded my money... but I'd rather have the rings.

Wait wait wait. USPS has tracking info, saying that the rings arrived.

Are you saying that the vendor who created a shipment that USPS says arrived is now saying they lost the rings?

Did your mail arrive yet today?

That's exactly what they are saying.
My mail doesn't arrive until noon.
It should be noted that my regular mail man just went out on leave for an operation so we have a substitute working his route. Every time our regular guy is out we have some problem with the mail delivery.

I found another supplier that allegedly has the Goetze rings in stock. They only sell full sets of 8 but their price is half that of what everyone else wants (who can't deliver). I placed the order... we'll see.

I gotta say....this thread beats my BenzyPalooza 2015 thread for continued adventure story plots.
