My nice beige 300D is getting a thin diesel film on the back by and around the tail lights, what is the best cleaner for this job?

Speaking of which, how do folks clean around the lettering? (e.g. 300D) I find it quite difficult to clean it to a satisfactory level.

It's a real PITA

If I ever re-paint, I'll probably leave off the the badging (except for the star)

I'm going to try the 409 and/or wd-40 trick. I've been using a synthetic polish which is sort of messy.

Try an old toothbrush with longer bristles. Or a cheap new one, to maintain stiffness that old toothbrushes used to have.

Or take them outcompletely, restore, then reinstall. I've never done this before, it's on my (ever long) list of things to do.

That was my next question, how to clean the 300D and Mercedes badges. lol. I will try a toothbrush, i was thinking the same thing.

WD-40, is that not a little harsh on the clear coat?

I can usually accomplish a thorough job around all the badges with just a cotton washcloth and my car wash soap (the pink Meguiars stuff).

In tight spaces I've resorted to using a foam paint brush (available in all sorts of sizes at most crafts stores) as a sponge.

WD40 does not hurt your clear coat, unless you apply it with a scouring pad.

Simple Green full strength + a toothbrush + elbow grease followed by a garden hose to rinse it off.

Great work there, the paint really shines. Wax makes it slightly dull, your paint could definitely use some polish - I would highly recommend Meguiar's #7, as I have advised before (search the archives).

However, try not to use too much rubbing compound. I would rather go for something much milder, like Meguiar's Scratch X, or something comparable to that.

Even with multiple tries, the lettering area still has some remaining dirt left. I've many times used a brush on them and yet they stay on. Hence my advise to remove them, or if you're satisfied with this level of cleaning, that should suffice.
