The "patch job" on my 89 $300te is failing so I'm in the process of rebuilding a donor. The donor lost a chain tensioner guide at 180k.

I see where the euro cars (no cats') have an extra 10hp. What benefit, if any would i see from gutting the cats'? Also thinking of doing port matching and a polish on the exhaust side. Or am I just wasting my time and should leave well enough alone......

thanks

John

There are other specifications - just not cats that increase the HP of the euro models. e.g. - Timing and compression are also different.

check the matching on the ports just for S&G. There might be room for improvement. Can't go wrong with trying to be more efficient with air flow.

Thanks for the input all! I'm well aware that any real gains are hard fought and tremendously expensive. I may give it a go, its not like it will hurt anything. I really like the little TE, but she doesn't have the "go" like my SEC (and never will!).

As an aside.... I was truly impressed with the minimal amount of wear found on the bottom end of the donor at 180,00 miles. No scarring of the cylinder walls, crosshatch still plainly visible, main and rod bearings looked "ok". I mic'd the thrust bearing--as new. I'm also surprised at the low cost of the parts-- Glyco mains for $90.00, Goezte (sp) set of rings $24.00. I think i may have more invested in the head work than the lower end when completed.....

You don't commonly see 200k+ miles, even on abused on W124's for a reason!

Even the crazy turbo guys say the stock bottom end is good for 400hp or so...

People commonly call it the last over engineered Benz (errantly in my opinion, I think the honour goes to the W140 although it was plagued with problems. But people overlook the R129.) for good reason.
