Hi all,

I just wanted to ask what tools do members recommend for DIY repairs on the w220 chassis? I have E Torx sockets, spanners and at Nick's recommendation E Torx ratchet spanners also.

(Note that I already have comprehensive tools for DIY servicing of other models such as W124 & W140)

R Clip pliers is the second new item I have bought for all those pesty clamps throughout the car. I do also have my own Star system.

What other tools might come in handy for w220 DIY jobs?

Good sockets are essential - 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2" drive, at least 72 step ratchets, and I use wall drive sockets for everything, like the old Metrinch system.
A good USB LED head torch is invaluable.
WIS & EPC on DVD to load on your PC ( in addition to SDS).
Oil filter wrench.
Aircon adapter to bleed charge coolers
Big can of Swarfega and Swarfega "wet wipes"
Sure I'll think of more stuff.

Aircon adapter to bleed charge coolers
Veering slightly off topic but for much valve cover gasket replacement I think pulling the charge coolers on top of the engine will make things a whole lot easier and may be essential in fact. I read this tutorial do you agree this might also work Nick? If you think the AC fittings are still best then I'll buy some of those. I can activate the pump in Star anyway which will be convenient in that regard.

If your get air in the IC system it's very difficult to get it all out, so I'd always try to avoid removing the coolers.

If you do need to remove them, and I can understand why, then the video you found isn't very good, because it doesn't mention manual switching the pump.

The simple method is to jump the pump relay, otherwise there's not knowing when it will turn on.

OK I will try to tie the inter coolers up and work around them. And only drian them if I cant get the valve covers off. The engine mounts will be done at the same time now as the cooling fan and all that is out.

I will add crows foot wrenches to the list. This trans cooler pipe was very tight and the awkward spanner angle felt like it would shear the fitting of the rad before it let go :oops:

These were perfect to get in there with a tight grip and apply nice even torque to undo the fitting without breaking anything

An impact wrench can help at times with some stubborn bolts. I use a Milwaukee Fuel unit because it's got mondo torque.

Also, a set of hose clamp pliers for Mercedes-Benz is a good idea. Something like this.


That one's no longer available, but the URL's short, and it gives you a good picture of what to use. Here's a longer URL for one that appears to be currently available.


Mercedes-Benz cars, being of European origin, use metric nuts and bolts. They use both T-Torx and E-Torx, in copious quantities, though an 8mm (5/16") socket also works perfectly on E10 Torx bolts.

If you've already got tools for W124 and W140, you're probably already well equipped for W220 as well.

But, as @Dave2302 said, definitely SDS.

Crows foot line wrenches as shown - absolutely.

flex head e torx sockets

vacuum lift for cooling system...purge air and refill both Secondary (IC) system and main cooling system.

while not needed, these have made my life much better. So convenient. I’ve got both 3/8” and 1/4”. Battery life is all day long, torque is modest, but use it like a ratchet to loosen or for final torque and it will zip bolts on and off all day long.

Yes it does. Works great on all cooling systems. Use it for radiators now, and never worry about air bubbles, air locks, or having to refill the system after a warm up/cool down cycle.

If so it's similar in principle to what MB use, which is not good enough IMHO.

They only achieve 90% vacuum at best, which will leave air in the system.

You need at least a single stage vane pump which delivers over 99% vacuum in order to get all the air out. Aircon vac pumps are ideal.

Use that in conjunction with a vacuum coolant re-filler like this:



None of these things are expensive, but they do the job properly.

Thanks Nick, as it happens I do already have a new AC vacuum pump like that. And ordered a very similar ebay kit to the one you linked. Identical function just looks slightly different.

I did have to remove the inter coolers to do the valve cover gaskets so I'll have to refill the IC system next weekend when the engine mounts are in and it is back together.
