Can anyone recomend a good brand and model for an OBD code reader for my 2001 ML320 ? The brand Innova and Actron seem to be popular. Is it worth getting a used one on ebay ? I also have a 2000 Chevy van I will use it for. Thanks in advance.

The higher the scanner number on Innova, the more capabilities it has. So invest in the 3160. Both Amazon and Wallmart are selling them.

A user review on Amazon indicated that the advanced features of the Innova 3160 do not work on Mercedes.

I have been satisfied with the Innova 0303 code reader that I bought at Sears for US$75.

I got used Actron CP9180 (with live data) from local craigslist for $80 and I'm very happy with it.

do these aftermarket scanners let you change adaptations.. Like for instance if you install factory bi-xenons and need to change the value in the computer. Or are they just code readers?

Generic OBDII scanner connects to engine only no other systems like AAM, EAM, ETC.

i'm sure this subject has been kicked around to death so forgive for asking.. but is there any cost effective option that lets you in system-wide?

In the Audi/vw world there is VAGCOM which is a software package and ODB cable that lets you control everything from a laptop.
