On US spec cars the mirror head/face is not removable from the stalk that juts down from the cabin ceiling. The screw for attaching the mirror to the stalk is installed and tightened before the mirror glass is installed.
On US spec cars you grab the stalk and yank the whole mirror assembly free of the roof bracket. It is designed to pop free during a crash so the stalk doesn't plow a furrow into your skull.
The stalk base has two spring-loaded balls that move slightly during removal and installation. Reinstalling a mirror can be a real bugger involving using all your strength to shove it up into the ceiling bracket. No fun at all.
