Not clear on what you're talking about.

On US spec cars the mirror head/face is not removable from the stalk that juts down from the cabin ceiling. The screw for attaching the mirror to the stalk is installed and tightened before the mirror glass is installed.

On US spec cars you grab the stalk and yank the whole mirror assembly free of the roof bracket. It is designed to pop free during a crash so the stalk doesn't plow a furrow into your skull.

The stalk base has two spring-loaded balls that move slightly during removal and installation. Reinstalling a mirror can be a real bugger involving using all your strength to shove it up into the ceiling bracket. No fun at all.

Ive done IT!

Just split the morror trim release glass push witha good deal of strenght on the ball and socket and then refit plastic

I'll have to try that next time! I have struggled with that mirror setup numerous times and didn't enjoy it at all.

Regarding rowly61, the original poster, I have to believe that Aussie versions get a different mirror setup. On the US spec mirrors that I'm familiar with, the only way to split the mirror surround trim is to destoy it. Believe me, I've tried to split that trim on junkyard donor mirrors. That's because all my cars eventually developed loose mirror head syndrome. There's just a small amount of slop when you adjust the mirror and it's very irritating to me. As I mentioned previously, the phillips head screw that secures the mirror head to the stalk is inserted from the glass side so access isn't possible.
