I came to this site after researching on how to get Mercedes Benz to own up to their severely rusted subframe issue here in NJ.
I have a GLK350 2011, I purchased this pre owned car 7 years ago and faithfully & routinely have my car serviced every year with my local Mercedes Benz Dealer. I'm a very loyal customer. Typically my local Benz dealer would tell me when there are issues upon inspection, like lightbulb replacement, windshield wiper etc. however they have never ever told me about this rust issue on my subframe. Within two weeks of having my routine service last month, I noticed my car navigating towards the left as I drive and I also could hear a weird clunk sound towards the back driver side of my car; as I drive over speed bumps in a parking lot. I took it to my family mechanic as I thought it couldn't possibly be bad since I just had my yearly service. To my surprise, my very honest and noble family mechanic stated that there is drastic major rust issue that he has never seen before on a car. He also showed me the issue and said its unsafe to drive. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing. I was absolutely horrified. How could my local dealership neglect the fact that my car had an unsafe rust issue on my rear sub frame. Needless to say I contacted my MB Dealer and they had advised that MB indeed have rust issues and have seen it before yet they don't check for that during inspection and that after having seen many they should start including this in their inspections. Well that's ridiculous, whether u check for it or not it’s very noticeable and a trained MB mechanic is able to easily identify it to protect the lives of their customers. The huge concern for me as a loyal customer why wouldn't they advise me of this FOR MY SAFEY? My MB dealer then went on to say that they will contact MB headquarters on my behalf to determine what monetary amount can they contribute as well as my local MB dealer stated they will also contribute to having it fixed. A week later today my local MB Dealer advised me that MB headquarters are willing to contribute 50% and he the local MB dealer was also willing to contribute 50% to having it fixed. BUT I will still have to come out of pocket in the amount of $5000. My question now is does this even make sense? How can if MB was willing to cover at 50% and the local MB dealer willing to contribute 50% why do I still have to pay $5000. I asked him how much is the total cost? He then said about $10,000. I'm now left wondering if my Local Benz dealer really in fact speak to someone in MB HQ? Something is not adding up. If MB HQ was willing to contribute 50% and my local MB dealer says he's willing to contribute 50% how convenient that I'm responsible for $5000? As I researched further I found that the total cost for this issue should not be over $5000. Sounds like to me that my local Benz dealer is trying to make me pay for the entire cost disguising it as if their trying to help me. This should definitely be a recall, and also my local Benz dealer neglected to advise me that my car was experiencing a rust issue over the seven years I have been taking my car for the annual service. I could have been involved in a deadly accident as a result of their neglect. Does anyone know what I should do? What about Mercedes owning this major rust defect issue?

Yeah, that.

I can't believe it's a systemic problem. I've been all over the under side of mine and didn't notice any abnormal rust.

Greetings,

First time poster here.

ianrandom, I own a 2011 GLK 350 as well. I just got back from the MB local dealer. They found that the rear subframe had rusted and broken. They quoted me $10k for the repair.

Can you let me know how you ended up taking care of your situation?

Thanks in advance.

For the record, the rear subframe part number (for a 2015 2WD) is A2123504205, and its LIST price is $1140 in July 2022. The book time for replacement is 9 hours. Let’s call it 10 for ease of calculation, and using $150/hour average shop rate I get:
$1140 Parts
$1500 Labor
$150 State taxes
$2790 Total

Every shop has a grift factor, but if its more than 20%, challenge them annoyingly for their calculation while vigorously seeking alternate shops. Any shop can do this swap.

Have you filed a report at NHTSA? This should not have happened and is a design flaw in the Merc vehicles. Get them to pay for it and force a re-call through NHTSA

Is there anyway we can file a class action lawsuit? This just happened to my 2014 E-350! I wash it every two weeks, and it is stored in a heated garage! I almost got into a head on collision, because when I hit the brakes driving 65 mph, my care veered into oncoming traffic. I slowly drove it directly to my mechanic. He is telling me that he can not in good conscience allow me to drive my car off of his lot, and that I will need to have it towed. He said there is literally nothing holding my rear tires to the frame of my car! He did some research and he found it is a common problem with the E class and C class. I still owe 8k, on it. So buying a new car is going to be a hardship!

No lawyer cares unless you've been injured due to MB's negligence. Your only options are to beg MB for a discount on the repair (believe me, they KNOW about this and will fight you), fix it yourself at your expense, or trade the car in for a new car. That's it. A class action lawsuit isn't going to happen without prior injuries or death. It's a sad world we live in.

My 2014 E350, (dealer-maintained, 60k miles) is sitting at the dealer with a corroded and broken subframe. It broke while I was on the highway, bent the torsion bar, and dented the gas tank. Fortunately, I was able to keep the car under control. Make sure you have reported this to NHTSA via their website. Also, submit a complaint to Mercedes customer service # at 800-222-0100. Mercedes needs to take care of this before there is a tragic accident.

I'm glad that you weren't injured (or worse) by the failure of this defective part. MB is just waiting for someone to be seriously injured or killed by their negligence...THEN they just might do something, anything, to let their customers (who they care very little about) know that they are driving death traps!
To have such a failure with 60K on the odometer is inexcusable. My wife's Lexus has almost 70K on the odo and all I've replaced is two small bolts holding some plastic bumper parts on. TWO SMALL BOLTS! That's it! The car is otherwise perfect. MB should take a lesson from Lexus on build quality.

So far I was offered the parts from MBUSA and I would need to pay the dealer to install them on my 2014 E350 with 60k miles. The installation quote is $2,450, which Mercedes should be paying for. This law firm is going for a class action, make sure you get registered unless you had to sign a release. Mercedes-Benz Vehicle Subframe Defects

Hi, I had the same problem with the subframe on our Mercedes. I called Vollux in Schnecksville and did a perfect job for less than 2,000.00 ask for Dominic.
