Hello,
I have a 2007 GL320CDI (which I love, for now!). VIN NO. WDC1648222A180888
I have recently had a whole host of apparently unrelated problems which after some investigation can be traced to a corroded rear SAM due to ingress of water at some time. The usual internet trawl revealed a common problem with both GL and ML models.
With a very savvy friend (a pro who has very expensive and comprehensive diagnostic equipment) we confirmed the diagnosis and removed and cleaned the SAM, but to no avail. We suspect there is unseen corrosion going on under the relay sockets on the board which I don't have the expertise to remove and refit.
Anyway the upshot is that I need a replacement unit and I am struggling to ID the current correct unit (or any other units that will do the job as fitted between 2007 and now).
The information off the current SAM is in the image below
2644021

I can get part no 164 900 54 01 which seems to list my car as compatible, I have also discovered part no 164 900 51 01 which seems to interchange with the previous (54 01).
I don't want to incur costs buying something that won't do the job.
Any help advice would be appreciated. This is a UK car by the way.
Cheers,
Neil.

Hi Neil

I have the same problem now with my GL and wondered if you had sorted the problem out with yours - conscious your post was dated 6 months ago,

I have ordered a service exchange unit from Mercedes. The only problem is they seem to be taking a very long time to come in to stock. However the upside is you get a genuine warranted Mercedes part. I tried a unit from a Chinese seller on Ebay which did actually work, sort of, the car functioned properly however there was still an ongoing fault with the car draining the battery, traced to the new unit 'clicking' and not going to sleep. After an in depth conversation between my electrician and Mercedes they came to the conclusion that there was probably a cracked chip on the board causing an electrical discharge and hence the unit discharging the battery. An attempt to get the unit swapped under warranty failed unsurprisingly and annoyingly, especially when I found out about the service exchange and it being cheaper than the one I bought off Ebay! Cost of unit from Mercedes with the refund for the exchange unit just over £284, cost off Ebay, around £310-£320 or more. The part number you require is A164 900 51 01, you will have to ask for a service exchange or the price is nudging £500, you might get it quicker though?

Hello,

Please can I how you got a service exchange from MB as I'd like to do the same?

Hello RM9, You will have to ask your local dealer for the part no above, which I believe is the same for the ML, and then specifically ask for a service exchange unit. They will ask for your reg no or vin no. and confirm the part you require anyway I would have thought. Good luck. Still waiting for my unit!! Just had a call from Mercedes Customer Service, I have to ring them back, iI have complained about the length of time for the unit.

Your welcome. I will try and remember to let you know how I get on. I was told the unit wouldn't arrive in Germany until 18th March! Ordered on the 4th of January. It is annoying when numerous dealers in the 'states have it on the shelf, but won't supply to the UK. If you have a friend in the US you might get one quicker than me!
