After an oil change 3 weeks ago, my indy noted a slight leak at the rear seal. Alas, I am now seeing spots of oil on the driveway.

2001 SL500, 116k miles
Never sat for an extended period of time and never ran on low oil.
Oil changes every 5,000 miles/Mobil 1

Is this common?

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Is there something else that could have caused 'premature wear?'

thank you!

I had a similar problem... I thought it was the rear main seal, but it ended up being a leak from the transmission. I had it fixed up before it caused a problem. I mentioned the problem (and what the fix was) in this thread:

I had my front seal go but not the back one. Could be a leak in the pan gasket or the o-ring for the tranny, double check. Dont feel bad, mine has 41K on the clock and still has leaks. The car is old, gaskets dry up.:crybaby2:
