Hi,
we recently got an 85 190E 2.3 for my girlfriend to drive.
I have noticed that there is a lound clunking sound and a slight lurch of the car forward or backward when shifting from drive to reverse, neutral to reverse, neutral to drive etc.
I suspect the rear CV joints are gone, but I wanted to know if anyone has a quick way to confirm this.

I was thinking of putting in park, jacking up both back wheels, and then seeing how much free play is in the wheels when I turn them.
Does this soud like the best way to go?

If indeed the CVs are gone, I would appreciate a link to a "how to / DIY" if anyone knows of one...

Praying that its not a stuffed transmission!

Thanks for your time :)

Hi thanks for your reply. Anyone else concur with this diagnosis?

Update

Crawled under the car, and the flex discs are both good. With the car in park, and both wheels on the ground (I'm a skinny guy and can crawl underneath) I grabbed the drive shaft and could turn it about a quarter inch either way before the shafts either side of the diff started to move. This means the diff is f*&cked right?
