Hi, not sure if anyone is interested but I thought I'd put together a little how to for the rear door speakers. When I bought the car it had a duff r/n/s speaker so thought I'd upgrade them a little bit. Very easy job, heres some photos!

No need to take the door card off, the grill is seperate and is removed by a single bolt underneath in the middle

You might just need to unclip the bottom of the doorcard, but there is space to get a stubby screwdriver in to undo the 4 screws in each corner of the speaker mounting plate. I think the earlier w202's only have 3 of these.

Reach up and squeeze together the electric connector and it'll come apart.

And there we go, everything out and ready to be worked on.

First things first, remove the foam from around the edge. Its easiest if you just pull a few lumps of foam out, then peel away the sticky backing.

Once that is done, slice through the label on the removable piece

Then flip it over and snap out the little glued in bridge

Then you can slide out the removeable section....

Now for the fun bit. If you are never going to use those speakers again (and lets face it they aint great!) cut through the paper cone....

Then its up do you how you get it out. Mine were bonded in and just wouldn't budge so I cut off the magnet section then jsut ripped it out. Once you've got it out you should be left with this.........

Now to remove that step on the edge. I just used a knife and kept scoring it until it came off. It would be easiest I guess on a belt sander. Remember its ABS though so won't take long to sand through! Once thats done you should have something that looks like..............

Now prop up one end and offer up your speaker. I used a 4" FLI Intergrater 4 150 watt and it fitted perfectly, but most 4" should fit fine.

Mark the holes on drill out either pilot holes for self tappers of full size holes for maching screws. Don't go any bigger then 4mm/M4 screws.

Then mount and fasten down the speaker. I used self tappers backed with star nuts.

Now, go back to the original speakers, make a note of how they are wired and cut off the plugs with a couple of inches on cable.

On mine, black was negative. Splice this into the harness that you get with the speakers

And then its back out to the car! Put one screw in the top corner just to take the weight, and plug it into the car loom. Now is probably a good time to test, Then refit all the remaining screws.

Then finally, refit the mesh grill, and no one knows whats behind there until you turn the stereo on!

The fronts look be very very similar, I'll do them another day and then finally the parcel shelf. I hope this helps someone!

thats exactly how i did mine! haha. nice write up!

do you have problems with the window and the back of the speaker? i dont think the clearance is a problem on the rear doors, its the front doors i had to worry about. i had to go with a very shallow speaker. there was a plastic backing behind where the "speaker holder" screws in which i did not cut out on mine because i didnt want to get in the way of the window. just something to think about when replacing door speakers...

It could be helpful for some to note that a heatgun maybe used with care on the speaker / bracket combination to remove the speaker from the bracket. Be careful, however, as like Caleb said, its only ABS, tends to melt with excessive heat.
