perhaps a 560 was a better purchase based on your posts...

Upgrade? What's wrong with the one you have? What are you trying to do? Are you having a 420 SEC, or SEL (looking at your data I can't tell, but I did not know they made a 420SEC).

Well, I got what was available to me at the moment. 600 bux for an 87 as long as I got it out off the yard by the weekend seemed like a good buy :grin
And, yes, I would have preferred a 560 but we make do with what we got

Well, I got confused (I guess I still am): he describes his car 420SEC, but in the post se mentions 420SEL. As for the reason of the upgrade, that's still unclear.

I am assuming the LSD would be what he should be looking for, but (again) it depends what he is trying to achieve and why.

As Liviu165 intimated, the answer to "the best diff" is "it depends".

If you want decent fuel mileage, then the stock 2.47:1 is a reasonable choice. If you want more performance, then a 2.65 is better. I had a custom 3.07 limited slip made ($3500 in 2001) that is a *really* fun differential in a 560SEC. That 3.07 LSD will very easily turn the tires in first gear and it will spin them going into second most of the time (235/40/18 tires), but when the tranny was rebuilt several years ago there were heavy duty parts put in there. It shifts very solid when asked to do so.

Whaddya want? What is 1. your budget and 2. your ability to be the mechanic?

Well, a buddy of mine had what I believe a 3.07 ratio off a w123 diesel on his 560 and it was really fun to drive :grin I was just wondering what I could do to my diff to make it have a little more humpf if you know what I mean :devil I don't remember what mods if any had to be made to his car that is why I am asking what other ones would be a good fit for mine. As far as budget goes, I have some saved up that was going into the car but it was gonna be pure cosmetic stuff(i.e. Euro headlights stuff like that) so I have a bit of wiggle room. And I can do most stuff myself at home with the proper tools

Stepping out on a limb here but I nominate myself to be the Official BenzWorld Bottom Feeder President :eek. This is a somewhat PROUD position to take on as being a Benz owner who prefers doing his own work on his car(s) and also prefers getting cheap but very well serviceable parts from the junkyards and not really caring if there are minor imperfections in and on his ride (PROOF that it wasn't parked in a garage for most of 24+ years)

For what we ALL have and the prices paid back then, in todays Dollar, Euro, Yen, DM, Peso, whatever, I certainly couldn't afford a $150,000 car and feel privileged that I can own one of the premium examples and safest car in the world the year that it was built and that the styling is still fresh (look at new newer Benz's of today, see what's BACK in the grill that used to ride in the hood). I'll stump no more, for now :grin but I think yall see my point, whatever you can afford, then make whatever improvements where and when you can, works for me

Well, if you're the President of Bottom Feeders, I humbly wish to nominate myself as Chief Bottom Feeder.

My CV: I'm on first name basis with many mail order houses, I have bookmarked many of the internet parts houses, of the close to 500 items I've sold on ebay many were MB parts, including the SLS rebuilt pumps I sell on ebay. Several friends have a standing date with me to go to the local Pic-a-part. We go "just because", not really needing something specific.

And... I share my salvage yard parts with others.

My SEC came from the factory with the LSD.
256 - REAR AXLE WITH LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL,
606 - OIL FOR REAR AXEL WITH LIMITED-DIFFERENTIAL IN CONTAINERS
Any idea what the ratio would be, 3.07 ?
