is it possible to replace the rear axle joint (the part nearest the wheel) from a different axle?

The problem is that the axle thread was damaged by some idiots who changed the rear bearing, axle for 400E is different from the rest of the W124 pack and a new one is something like $800 here. I can get a lot of good axles from other models - but they don't fit because the differential is attached differently...

I know who did it and I will try to argue with them to get me a new axle, but in the meantime this might be a solution...

Right now I am afraid the whole wheel will come off because there is something like 60% of the thread left...

thanks

While I haven't done this, I'm 99% sure it can be done. The inner and outer joints are held onto the axle shaft by snap rings and they are easy to remove/install on other makes. You will have to spread/loosen or cut the boot clamps to get at the joints and snap rings though.
