Noticed A lot of people asking around online (and in person), how good are these 2005 & 2006 E class Diesels? With these W211's selling for pretty fair amounts lately, those of us with high mileage w211 diesels, lets share our stories and set the record straight on how reliable these cars have been.

I have a 2005 E320 CDI, Black on black, lovely amount of options, and just this weekend rolled over 407,000 miles. Yes, that number of 0's is correct. :grin

I've only owned this car for a few months, but according to the previous owner, the car had never had any major out of normal maintence repairs.(the SBC unit was changed at about 310,000 miles though.) Original engine and transmission. He used it for sales and drove it all over the country. He absolutely loved the car.

As soon as i got the car, i did a transmission and engine oil change. transmission fluid looked like it was changed about 10-20k miles ago, no metal shavings at all. Engine oil was jet black, normal with diesels. Smelled great and just like the tranny, no metal shavings at all.

I have the iCarsoft i980 scanner, and am able to scan all individual computer systems to see all the error codes that have come up over the history of the car. The only abnormal error code was related with the SBC pump, which i mentioned above.

I'm not joking, the odometer is the only thing on this car that shows its age. You'd have no idea it had more than 100k on it if it wasn't for the odometer.
the only things ive had to do with the car was (other than oil changes) change the glow plug controller, and change the thermostat. Both easily diyable jobs. I honestly don't see much on these cars that ISNT DIYable if you have the right tools and knowledge.

There's no doubt in my mind that these cars, when maintained properly, are 500k + mile cars.

Others with high Mileage w211 diesels, feel free to chime in with your stories, good or bad!! spread the news. :)

EDIT:

Added some photos! ignore the dirtiness and the lesser 190D & C280 ;)

I own a w211 e220 cdi 2005 with 230000 km. In my two years of ownership i have been very happy with it. Some minor issues i have had is an eletrical issue that caused the odometer to stop wirking but easy fix for 7 $ and a ballast of the headlight replaced. Very happy with it . The sbc pump has been replaced in 2009 and havent had any issues ?

I own a w211 2006 e320 cdi. Have owned it for 8 years and besides routine maintenance and some other boneheaded stuff I caused the car has been very durable.

183k miles..

3rd thermostat.
5 injectors sealed (1 replaced when I tried to do it myself).
water pump replaced.
2 serpentines with tensioners and pulleys.
Nav gave up around 4 years ago. Siri was better anyway..
4th set of tires.
The only real special tool I bought was the 74mm 14 flute oil filter wrench.
Needs ball joints, torque thrust arms..

You get the point..

The car has been very reliable and gets real good mileage. Still on the original SBC, but saving for a replacement if the original gives up.

Either way you look at it, you can't go wrong with this model..
Good luck on finding one for sale.

Probably 90% of the e320 cdi's came here with the premium package, and sunroof. The more desirable options are the keyless go, pano roof, wood steering wheel, HID's, folding rear seats, and active seats (2005 model only).

I would strongly recommend the model.. You will be instantly addicted to the torque, and will get used to filling up and driving 50 miles with the fuel needle not even moving..

I love hearing the high mileage stories...have heard several in the low 400k range. I've only owned mine 6 months and driven 7k miles, but it's been phenomenally well maintained and it expect to get 400k out of it...if I live that long...haha.

The SBC issue really doesn't concern me much at all (though I stressed about it at first). So what if I have to drop $1300 when it goes out....not a huge deal.

Yeah, sbc isnt a big issue. ive done a ton of research on it, and pretty much everything on the system is diyable. brake jobs, brake fluid flushes, even swapping the entire control unit and pump out is diyable. rebuild controllers (with new pump and accumulator) can be found on ebay for around $700.

im actually excited for when mine goes out. I rebuild electrical and hydraulic motors for a living, so im going to tear it down and rebuild it myself. haha :wink

What Mobil 1 type of oil do you recommend ?

The other recommended oil, per the Owner's Manual for our 2005 E320 CDI, is 0W-40 or 5W-40 that meets Mercedes-Benz 229.3 or 229.5 specification. Mobil-1 Fully Synthetic European Formula is one of several oils that meets that specification and is what I use.
