I was thinking a nice addition to the tech links thread might be an organized gallery of some "already pulled apart" car pics. I find real life images to be priceless compared to black and white print outs and gummed up Haynes manuals when I'm trying to get me head around things. Would there be any interest in collecting pictures of our various w123 models with their clothes off? My coupe right now is completely pulled apart, dash and all, so if anyone is interested in specific sections for current or later reference I'd be happy to snap some pics of certain sections. If everyone did the same when they had their cars up on the lift or pulled apart for tinkering, it wouldn't leave much guess work out there. Anyodd, here's a sad shot to get the ball rolling haha.
Best,

Can you perhaps give detailed description on removing the dash?

I'm about to install brand new OEM window regulators and motors, and would like to complete the wiring installation as original as possible, starting at the fuse box.

Also, I don't know if some of the other guys experience it, but my dash squeeks quite a bit where it touches the windscreen seal, especially in summer when it's hot. So what I want to do is to attach a strip of weather proofing (those 0.5" spongestrips with the adhesive backing) to eliminate the squeeking.

Hope you'll be able to help!

The dash isn't as bad as it's made out to be. I think the key is to make reference when you're taking it off. Take the instrument cluster out (slides out, be sure to disconnect everything in the back) and take both under dash panels off (pop off the blue clips and take out the few screws). There are two bolts on both end of the dash, two under the speaker covers (take these off, you don't have to take the speakers out, just disconnect them) and I believe 3 in the middle. The middle ones are accessable if you pop out the wood trim/four switch (ant, dome etc) assembly out. Taking the center wood strip off will also give you access but I couldn't reach it from behind.
It is very hard (and believe me I tried) to get it out with the steering wheel on! There is a hex/allen bolt in the center of the steering wheel (take the horn pad and center cap off) that will let you take the steering wheel right off but when I did it, I couldn't crack it with what I had. The way I avoided the steering wheel was by loosening the two nuts on the U bolt holding the steering column up. These are super easy to get at and the whole column falls into your lap. Also you don't have to mark your steering postion etc as you have to do if you take the steering wheel right off. With the steering column loosened, it'll give you enough space to get the driverside corner out.
Once you've done all that, it shouldn't be a problem to get it moving. From there, all I did was disconnect any last binding hoses/wires. The vent hoses will have to come off, glove compartment, as well as some random ties but it's all pretty evident.
I think that's all you'll need. I'll snap some pics right now to give you a good picture what to expect.
Yay...see it'll help already to get some real shots out there!
Best and good luck.

I used to have tons of folders for whenever I DIYed something, but I didn't post them here because it was too much and the members would have a hard time looking something up if we all posted them together.

What I did was just compile them (or what's left - PC crash) and just post them with some editing if needed, to point out things to other members. It would be great if you could get some of the harder to reach ones, or ones specialized for the coupe, or something.

Karugs,
Agreed ... after a bit of family issues I've left the mercedes fun for a bit but I'd like to get www.thewesthavers.com back up now that things have calmed for the time being. I think a section there would be the ticket. NovaScotia300TD has a pile from when we did his engine swap ...they'd be great wagon specific ones. Anyways my car is still in shambles so I'll snap a pile for the couper's. If you've got some 300D ones maybe in the future I'll hit you up for a pic donation ;).
If anyone else is currently trying to imagine the deep relms of their car, I'd be happy to take some requests in the time being.

Could you post some pictures close to under dashboard? I may have to pull out mine one day.
