I have a 1994 E320 Sedan, I tried to read the check engine codes in the Engine compartment self diagnostic module. I turned the ignition to ON, without starting the car, and I pressed and held the button on the self diagnostic module hoping it would start flashing so I can read the stored codes, the module light didn't flash.
Is it supposed to flash? Is it possible for the home mechanic to self diagnose this car check engine light using the on board module?
Also, where can I find a list of the engine codes?

Start the engine and let it idle for a few seconds.

Depress the button for a couple of seconds, then watch the pattern of the light.

1 flash = all OK

5 flashes = EGR low flow (clogged tube usually, very common)

If you have more than 1 code, it will appear in this format: code, followed by a pause, next code, pause, etc.

I'm fairly sure code 2 is indicative of a bad oxygen sensor. After replacement, clear codes by starting engine and holding down button for about 10 seconds.

Turn off engine and restart, check engine light should now be off.

Uh, I think this is called hijacking a thread .. but here goes! :)

sbaert, you mentioned Code 5 for low-flow through EGR tube. I've replaced my EGR and the vacuum switching box and still got the code. I then ran compressed air into each tube at 90psi and it sounded fine but still get the code. The tube from the exhaust manifold to the EGR is for sure OK, is there really a problem in the flow through the other tube if compressed air got through?

If by clearing the codes you mean disconnecting the battery for 15 mins, yes. That's the only way I know to do that.

And no, I did not remove the EGR pipe to clean it, I only blew compressed air through it to see if it was blocked. I couldn't see where the other end attached - is it easily accessible to remove? Do you just run some brake cleaner through it once it's off?

Thanks for your help, I certainly wouldn't mind clearing my check engine light!

Removing the EGR pipe is a major PITA since it runs behind the head and then down below the rear of the intake manifold.

After my diesel experiment with Chrysler Combustion Chamber cleaner, I used a whole can (on a hot engine). Simple disconnect the pipe at the EGR valve, and spray in the CCC until it starts foaming out the pipe. Repeat until can is empty. Wait 30 minutes and reconnect pipe.

Haven't had any check engine lights since and much easier than R&R the pipe or using a speedo cable as a reamer.

I have the same car. 1994 E320 and when I held down the button the light only just came on and stayed lit up.

Did I do this right? I thought it was supposed to FLASH. Meaning the LED would just light up and then go out.

They should be near the button you push down on the unit next to the battery. They are electrical receptacles for the banana plugs described in the link I sent you. Yes, you'll need to make the $5 homemade reading tool to get the codes from Pins 8 and 14. The link I provided contains other links you should look through and get familiar with.

Pressing the button on the 16 pin connector near the battery, I got 10 flashes, I believe this is MAF sensor, I have already replaced it. I do not get any other codes. Using a home made led tester I only get codes on socket 6 (3,4,8) check engine light is on and engine idle surges occasionally. Any suggestions?
