:surrender: Well my wife has reached her tolerance level with her 2001 ML30. we have been trying to fix the infamous secondary air pump issues since she got it. after lots of money spent at repair shops and DIY remedies found here, the issue remains.

She wants to just cut her losses and sell the truck as is. I know she will not get a decent amount due to the CEL, but I am asking your opinions on what she can reasonably expect.

its a 2001 ML320 with 160K and other from the aforementioned issue, it runs fine.

I do appreciate your honest opinions. TIA

I feel for you, my 99 ML320 has the same CEL on with P0410, runs great just like yours.

I drove 4500 mile trip to Colorado in Sept/Oct, without a hitch.
The ML drove wonderfully on dirt/mud/icy roads over Colorado's high mountain passes, I really want/need to keep this truck, but if it can't pass the CA smog check with CEL on, I don't know what I'm going to do. But it's still 16 months away, I'll deal with it when I get there.

Somebody please help!

There is a system override to prevent P0410. Secondary air injection error occur when the ECU can't detect lean exhaust gas mixture cause by the air injection pump.

On cold start, air pump blows air to the exhaust port making the 02 sensor sense lean mixture and send this signal to the ECU which in turn sends signal to enrich the air/gas mixture. The purpose of this process is to warm up the Cat quickly to its operating temp. After the warm up process the secondary air pump would stop and the 02 sensor would return to normal operation. So, after the engine is warmed up, P0410 don't have any effect on the engine's performance.

Search the forum and you'll find the override using relays and resistor that fools the ECU that when the secondary air pump is on, the 02 sensor is reading a lean mixture.

Regarding passing smog test: The cel will turn on after 2 cycle of error is recorded. Before you go the smog testing station, clear the CEL if it is currently on. After clearing the CEL, preferably during a hot day, start you car and drive around for a while. Then park the car and scan for error, most definitely you'll find a pending P0410 error, clear it and take it to the smog station. When you start the car CEL caused by P0410 won't occur because the car is already warmed up.

Good luck.

Clearing the code will wipe out the readiness monitors. It may take up to 75 miles of mellow driving to get them all back online. CA will not pass the vehicle if the readiness monitors are not set.

The electronic defeat/workaround will work, but I can't find the thread.

Absolutely Brilliant! The startup check for the system is bypassed when the engine temperature is normal
