re: 87 300SDL Late Shift, Loss of Power

Hi all,

Recently my transmission started to shift late between the gears. Also there seems to be somewhat of a momentary loss of power at certain times, almost as if the engine has stalled for a few moments. I visually checked vacuum lines under the hood, but to no avail. Transmission fluid is up to snuff... does this sound familiar to anyone? any ideas???

When was the last time you change the main fuel filter (Sliver screw on type) Up front by the radiator

re: 87 300SDL Late Shift, Loss of Power

Hi there,

Yes I had the same problems. I also felt a big jerk (or kick) when it changed from gear 2 to gear 3. In additon to these I also had regular transmission fluid leak. Check under the car and see if you can find drops of red fluid. After several transmission fluid changes, I was warned that the transmission can break down right in the middle of the highway. It happened in one of my earlier Dodge Aries car. So I put a rebuilt transmission for 3K. The late shift is gone, but I still feel a light kick when it changes gears. Hope this helps.

Yours,

Ramesh.

The vacuum modulator may need to be adjusted. A visual check will not expose small leaks – the vacuum system for the diesel transmission, especially after 1985, is very sensitive to the smallest variant in system pressure. A small leak can cause late shifting and/or flaring.

On the driver’s side, under the car on the side of the transmission the round, either black or brown thing with the vacuum line attached to it. You can pry off the black rubber cap and use the T handle pin too adjust vacuum.

I still think if you have power loss or hesitation you need spend $8.00 and change the main fuel filter

I agree the filter s/b changed but the late shift would not be related to clogged filters. Also, the momentary loss of power could be explained by flaring. A filter change is quick and easy – may even be needed by now, no harm in that – then you can rule that out as a possible cause.
