Just put a new tensioner on it today, and had that small torque shock off to check it out.
The torque shock seems fine, the noise is not from that area. I actually thought that shock and tensioner combo was causing the noise and have noticed over the last year that the tensioner was starting to separate and thought the noise was from there, new tensioner is tracking much better but there is still this loud noise under the valve cover.
Threw a set of bosch + plugs in it today as well, as it has over 300K kms on it and I have no idea when they were done. (plugs weren't too bad, and wires are in great shape so I guess the p.o. did them at some point prior to my buying it last year.

I was tempted to pull the valve cover when I did the plugs, but not sure what I would find underneath.
I am guessing the noise is a timing chain tensioner or something, was just hoping someone on here had heard this type of noise before, I have been driving it since last year with this noise and it has not gotten any worse, but if it was an inexpensive fix I wanted to take care of it and maybe get it quiet.

I had that exact same sound and it was the belt tensioner shock. When i would press the gas a little bit the rattle would go away but when idling the rattle was constant.

It is not the tensioner itself but the shock attached to it. I also initially didn't think it was the tensioner shock because when i took the shock out, the shock didn't seem damaged and didn't seem loose to rattle but I replaced it anyways and the noise is now gone.

I would suggest replacing the tensioner shock as it is not very expensive and is easy to replace.

I am thinking timing belt tensioner or something in the top end in the area of the timing chain?
Been driving it this way for over a year now and still seems good, so I have not gotten in to pulling the top end apart anymore.

I know it is not a tensioner and shock issue, but I am surprised no one else has chimed in and heard this noise before?

Anybody??

Your lucky you only have ONE vibration/rattle haha, I have a '99 C230K sport. It rattles more than my moms scion XA that is ALL Plastic :p. It really just started rattiling when I hit 140,000 miles. I have rattles inside, outside, and in the engine area. Oh well, as long as it runs haha. Sorry i'm not able to help with your problem though.
