I have a terribly annoying rattle coming from my gear selector (auto trans 300tdt). I have determined it is not transmission related, if i barely rest my hand on the lever it will be quiet but if i let go it starts again. Worst at idle or low rpm's. Any idea's?

the shifter bushing could be worn making a metal on metal rattle. Is there play in the selector?

Well I guess that is where your problem lies. I was trying to find you instructions on how to do it but I couldn't find any.

There are plastic bushings at each end of the shift rod that are pressed into the levers. They fall apart with age. They can be purchased and replaced from underneath. That is likely your problem. The part number is 115 992 03 10.

I had the same problem and changed the bushings...amazing difference. I was very surprised to find the arm of the gear shift bearly hanging hanging onto the linkage to the transmission. Scary to think I had been putting up with it for an entire year.

The change is easy. I removed my center console, then the plastic housing around the gear selector, then there are a few bolts under that that are holding the selector in place, remove that (keeping the e-brake on of course). You'll be able to pull the selector up and look down under the car where the linkage is. I used a magnet to keep ahold of the linkage while I put the bushing on the selector arm. I got the bushing from Autohaus AZ for a couple bucks. Warning: the bushing is a total bitch to get on, I used persistence and a screwdriver to shim it on. Once you have it on, reconnect it to the linkage and put it all back together. Pretty easy actually and you don't necessarily have to go under the car to do it.

You need two of each:

Your Parts Search Returned 2 Part(s)

The item above (PN 1152671250) are for the shifter itself, while the item below is for the shift linkage bushings in the transmission tunnel. You'll need to get under the car to replace the last one that's most forward, while the other three should be doable from inside the car. If you're replacing the bushings for the shifter itself, you can easily access the third bushing for the shift linkage, so doing three from inside is feasible. I still have a very mild rattle because I haven't replaced the fourth one...

Mercedessource is not the only one that marks up prices! A 75 cent thermostat gasket from autohausaz.com goes for $ 8 + at your local MB dealer! In fact, there have been sharp increases in cost of parts at dealerships lately. Another example: A $ 6 water temperature sending unit goes for over $ 50 at Mercedes dealerships!

How is that for a ridiculous markup? I do not defend the Merdecessource, but the guy provides good instructions and often simple installation aids, and those are worth something to people. They are worth a few extra bucks to me.
