I have a 1991 Mercedes 190e 2.3, and have noticed a rattle lately. It sounds like its coming from underneath the car and on the passenger side. It only happens when I'm accelerating. I can hear it when my windows are down and I'm driving next to a wall or car, somewhere where the sound can bounce off. Any ideas of what it might be? I'm thinking it could be something with the exhaust system, but thats just a guess.

It's most likely your shifter bushings.

Do you have an automatic or a manual?

This is just a guess without seeing the car.

Check to see if you have that creamy froth in your coolant tank. If you do, then it is likely you have a leaky head gasket. It may be coolant seeping into the exhaust stream that burned out the catalytic honeycomb inside your catalytic converter. A new exhaust system from the dealer is $2,500.

The honeycomb shrivels up into a ball and rattles around inside the steel casing. When you go in reverse, the car whistles.

However, do not replace the exhaust system until you perform a head gasket replacement and a machining of the head ($2,000). You'll destroy the new catalytic converter.

^ rofl, way to give the poor guy a heart attack.

It's something much simpler, probably a heat shield. They're notorious for corroding away from their flimsy weld points and making all kinds of noise.

Have someone small, preferably a kid if you have any, hang onto the undercarriage of your car while you drive down the road and have him or her locate the exact part that's making the noise.
