OK...this has been going on for approx the last two weeks in my 99 ML430. I have had this vehicle since new, and believe me, I am familiar with all the little noises and lights that occur from time to time.

This one has got me flummoxed. A single beep, a split second in duration..coming from somewhere up near the dash. I thought it could possibly be the Alpine aftermarket radio or possibly the IPod attached to it, but this morning driving around with the radio OFF, I heard it again, plain as day.

Over the span of a couple of weeks, I have probably heard it four or five times, but I do have a habit of driving with the music pretty loud....might have missed a few.

No lights on the dash....nothing. Anybody got a clue ?

I'll have to check that out. NEVER had that happen before, but it could be something like that.

It is the EXACT same sound as my wife's 98 E320 wagon when it denotes a blown light bulb. And believe me, both her and I are VERY familiar with that beep. It was an everyday occurance as soon as you cut on the headlights, or touched the brake pedal before you backed out of the garage.

It was so aggrevating and it pretty much bugged us from day one back in 1998. Finally found the solution. REPLACE every one of the bulb holders that got their juice from the mount that they locked in to. What a horrible, horrible design from Mercedes.

I even went as far as buying the entire rear tail light assemblies and replacing them. Just a temporary fix that lasted for about six months. The circuits that trip the beep and bulb out display on the dash were very very sensitive to voltage fluctuations.

The FIX was to thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces, use new bulb holders and use only the MB bulbs (what a racket !!).

It took my wife a while to get use to the beep NOT occurring...she actually thought something was wrong with the car in not hearing it !!. Just the opposite was true.......

Next time it goes off in the ML, I will glance at the odometer....Thanks for the suggestion.

FAR888 you nailed it ! This morning the beep occurred a few minutes after I filled up and also checked the oil at the local Quicktrip. It was a hair over the full mark but the level does fluctuate a bit depending on the level of where you are parked.

Got home removed about a pint of the oil via a Mity-vac and rechecked the level. Now about 1/8 below the full mark. Hopefully that will take care of the random beep.

I looked thru the manual and did not see any reference to this feature. I would assume you would also get a beep if the oil level was too low. Not exactly sure where in the oil reservoir the sensor is located or what trips the indicator. Anybody had to replace this sensor or have any idea of its location ?

And...yes...when the beep occured there was a flashing OIL HI in the odometer display. One beep and then the message flashed for about five seconds.
