Hi,

My friend has a 1988 260 E and had to replace the alternator, since the battery was unhooked and now everything back in place the radio won't turn on. It shows "code" on the display. Any idea what the code is and how to enter it? Step by step instructions will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

An '88 260E is a W124 chassis. You can get better responses there. I'll move your thread to the correct section.

The only radio available from the factory in 1988 didn't require a code with loss of power...
Probably a later model Merc radio was installed and it will be difficult to trace as the VIN is unknown...

Keep Googling.

When this happened to my Becker 1432 I googled and googled and found a site or app that could calculate the CODE from the serial number on the radio.

You can also pay Becker some $$$ and they will tell you.

Just keep looking.

The 1988 uses a Becker 780 "Grand Prix"....if the face of the radio/cassette door is imprinted "Becker" then it's the factory radio and requires no code.

From 1990 ( 1480, 1432, 1492 ) on, the radio face was imprinted "Mercedes Benz".
These radios require a code after loss of power.

The OP needs to determine what radio he has because if it is the factory radio no code is required.

Becker Grand Prix Electronic Model BE 780

Info on all the Becker radios in Mercs:

If it is indeed a later model, you will need to pull it and get the serial number. As stated before, the vin will be useless for finding it. If mb is anything like vw they will be able to look it up via serial number

I'm a lazy pr*ck so will ask you too search my posts; within them you'll find the name of a website that will give you the code, all they need is the serial number.
