I've replaced many head units but removing & replacing the radio in my '84 190D seems complicated. At first look, it appears that I must remove the entire upper center console assembly. Is that right or is there an easier way? Can anyone provide some instructions to R&R the radio?

Yes you have to remove the center console. Theres 6 screws total that you have to remove. 2 screws where the center top vents are.....2 screws on the bottom side vents...and 2 screws to remove the ashtray. Plus, you will have to disconnect all the electrical connections.

You do not need to remove the whole console, you can do it easily by taking the ashtray out. Remember that the original wiring harness does not have a lot of slack. So only cut off what you will not use.
