I've had my 02 ML500 for a couple years now. It's been a terrific truck, but the radio has a mind of its own. It works perfectly with the key on not running, AM & weather works all the time. The second I start the truck fm radio is kill :( I'll toss in an after market radio if I have too but that looks like a lot of trouble. Suggestions, tips, wild ideas, all appreciated Ty!

Could be your FM amplifier in the rear hatch

EDIT:
Swapping HU. Depending on FO or non-FO system, the swap can be relatively simple.
There are plenty of write ups on the forum on this swap.
Which do you have?

Jimmy lots written on radios here you do have D2B fiber optic it is not impossible it is just what you want, whole system, just the head unit, head unit and a amp. And it takes more time.

As to why for on and off? Your problem is not too common, more common is sound goes in and out. That is the fiber optic output chip.

I think Khomer is on to something with antenna amp!

yes, I've read and scratched my head a few times, given up once lol.
yes, this is the fiber optic system
easiest aftermarket install I've seen is hacking the amp in the footwell. I'm not very good at standing on my head anymore. :)
I'll pop the cover on the hatch next chance I get TY Khomer & wallyo!

when using the amp you pull it out gut it, make a junction box splicing in wires that will connect to the new head unit’s harness plug, all on the bench.

Meant to add a few months back a member went to Best Buy the tech installed a new head unit for about 200.
