I have terribel reception on my radio both AM and FM. Additionally, I need to be standing within 5 feet for my electronic key to work. Are the two systems connected? If so, how? My assumption is the their is a fault somewhere in the wiring for both.

Likely yes. You don't mention if your car is an MB, I assume that. Could you tell more details, model, model year etc.

The key may work through the IR receiver on the door handle. Only works from a short distance. The key would work through RF on a longer distance but your antenna may have problems (amplifier). The problem could affect both the RF receiver for the key as well as the radio.
