I have never considered a radar detector until the purchase of my mid-life crisis car last month, I find myself lead footed in the SL any suggestions on a good detector for mostly highway driving.

Thanks

It depends of what LEO uses in your area.

- If they use RADAR, any good detector would do, if it is in the high end - like Valentine1, Escort 9500i, Beltronics STI. Just mount high, and brake instantly. Practically there are now false-positives on highway. If LEO is very clever, he can toast you without enough early warning, because he will use short bursts at selected very-high over-speeders with long interval in between.

- If they use LIDAR (laser radar), none of the detectors would help and you are toast 95% of time, because laser beam is very narrow, even @200-300 meters it is ~0,5 m. max. and you will get warning, only if accidental hit by beam, while the other car is measured/random reflection. Measuring time is max. ~0,3 sec. - not enough time to even react on brakes.
You must use active countermeasure to counter this issue. I will be installing one in a few weeks time, might let know about performance, it looks promising. This lets you to jam the laser for a few sec., slow down, switch countermeasure off.

- If they use optical/induction counters (based on photos and sequenced timing), your are toast without any warning.

And my advice - in summer time, if I want to get of @250 km/h, I do that in the morning time ~4:00 am, at dawn, when I know, that I will not hit any LEO, or any other accidental car.

Good information Thanks. I have done some research and it looks like they use both Laser and regular radar. I would hate to spend $300 on a good detector and get nailed with Laser.

radar detector

I purchased an escort 9500xi for my wife and her 06 500SL for xmas and she loves it. It cancels out false alerts and stores the location within its GPS after passing false alert location after three times. She loves that feature; as it does not give false alarm noises in local travels. I would highly recommend - about $500 bucks. She has not gotten any tickets yet ...

I have the V-1 in all 3 cars...hard wired next to the rear view mirror. Also have an older K40 in the Corvette.
I like the V-1s. Also set the cruise to 5 mph over the limit......never have a problem.

Come on Boston Joe if I was going to set the cruise +5 Why bother with a detector. Had a chat with a state trooper today who basically told me radar detectors are junk so in the end +5 with short excursions into triple digits will have to do.

Thanks for the input

laser jammers are the way to go. the laser interceptors are the best thing out there right now and jam all known lasers and it has been tested by independent groups. don't trust any jammer that has not been tested by outside groups. blinder jammers are good too. i had the blinders but just upgraded to the L.I.s

you will still need a decent radar detector for leo's who still use it. i use the V1 hardwired.
