I'm looking for a cheap (under $50 maybe even used) radar detector, any suggestions, anyone have one?
I recommend that you don't bother. It will cost you more irritation than to be of use. Save that money and put it towards saving up for a proper unit that will actually help you, such as an Escort 8500 or better yet, the ultimate, a Valentine 1.

agreed.
my cheap ass saved up and bought the Solo S2 [cordless version of Passport 8500]
not that i speed alot..i just like to know whats going on around me...because i tend to freak out when i see a cop just sittin on the side of the road...feeling like ive done something wrong...even thought i havent.

sadly though...it doesnt seem that cops around where i live now use radar as much as my old apt back east. but its cool. still saved me a couple times :) and ive definately gotten my value out of it by detecting speed traps and the like :-D

I agree with everyone ... get a Valentine 1. It pays for itself after the first speeding ticket it saves you from. [^]

Valentine 1, dont leave home with out it. 5 years now no ticket and i do dumb shit.

Bristol Va to Gulf Shores Alabama. 850 miles, 10 hours 25 min and 3 stops for gas. The G wagon does not go very well.

I also have some firend that will remain name less be cause you never know who surfs... they have ferraries, vipers, corvettes with lots of parts. They will pull out on the local empty 4 lanes and just start rowing gears. I said Damn X, you dont care about cops do you. He said Valentine 1 son, as he grabbed 5th in his lingenfelter ZR-1. Speed limit on that road was 55 mph.

All in all they are the best out there. $550. is a lot for a radar detector, but they will save you. Mine has paid for its self at least 30 times and god on knows how much on insurance. Also you dont feel as bad about the money when every person that ride with you is like " where is the cop? that think is going crazy, Then a mile later you pass him on the side of the road, and your passanger goes " that is the shit".

I agree totally

The only issue is to make sure you still watch your rearview mirror because here in Illinois the troopers will come up fast behind you with no radar warning and then POP you. It only happened to me once and there was no mistaking the Crown Vic headlights from a ways back. He came up on my tail but I had drifted down to 10 MPH over not using my breaks and he stealthly went into the right lane passed me and quickly nabbed a V8 X5 in the left lane going at least 85. We also have Mustang and Camaro unmarked cruisers but they are rare compared to the Ford's. If they POP someone else behind you the V1 will pick up the signal and you can react accordingly. The roads are always busy here so you can play hide and seek. Late at night when you are basically alone is where the V1 really comes in handy. I never worry a bit going 90 to 100 in those sitches--on a tollway that is. I don't do fast two lane driving at all.

Get the V1. It's the best and worth the price many times over as Kerr attests.

I have an Escort 8500 X50 and really like it. When I bought it, it was really a toss-up between it and the V1, but I chose the Escort because the blue LED’s match my MCS screen. Seriously, all the reviews I read gave the Escort the edge, but of course I lost out on the directional indicator of the V1. Anyhow, it alerts me in plenty of time to slow down and picks up “pops. It has saved me from many tickets.

The problem is that I’ve found most detectors to be all but useless on laser. I used to not worry so much about laser, but every time we drive through Atlanta (our daughter and granddaughter live there so we visit at least monthly) I see at least two cops using laser. They now have a new weapon with a combination laser and video camera. The camera’s CCD can actually “see the laser spot on YOUR vehicle, so when you go to court, there is no doubt. The beams on the new guns are so tight, that off axis detection is rare. That means that when your detector goes off because it senses laser, it’s really just alerting you that you need to pull over and accept your citation. I think I’m going to add Escort’s ZR3 laser “shifter. Anyone have any experience with it?

Rodney, I have a couple of friends who have gone with the Lidatek Laser Jammer units and have been extremely happy with the results. I would suggest that you consider that as well; this unit is very popular among BMW M5 and Audi owners.
