An Australian Race Car veteran and icon Ian Luff, has been running a driving school for the past 30 years at a local race track in Western Sydney called Oran Park. They recently closed that course for housing and so Ian's team moved to Eastern Creek, the major race facility (and last) in Sydney Australia.
The inagural event took place Wednesday night 5/10/11) where they set up a tarmac challenge for 10 participants to run their cars flat out around a twisting 800m circuit without speed limits. Mind you there were plenty of barriers and traffic cones - so as you did the first intial "walk around", the thought of smashing into a barrier and damaging your precious baby was front and centre.
There were some pretty fast cars there and lots of horse power - but the twsts were the equaliser. I managed a 41.8 best whilst the others ranged from 36 through to 43. Of course if there was more than a 200m straight, I'm sure the big boys would have left me in the dust. The white car pictured is the latest 450hp offering from the local GM subsiduary here called Holden - its best time 38secs. The AC replica - 44secs - owner was a little protective/cautious. The smaller car is called an "Aussie Race Cars Series" (1100 Suzuki+6 speed seq. box) and did 37secs.
Hopefully they will post a Youtube of the event and I'll post that link if it comes through. Pickies to follow.
Ultimate Goal is to get my CAMS2 license ($40 year) and get on the proper race track next door for a spin - 200+ clicks (125mph).
