I have a real stumper of a headache with this R350 Fuel Gauge

It does not move off empty (though the low fuel light does go off when you start it)

Star Diagnostics, shows F(ault) on Motor Electronics 9.7 says error 2225 there is a short circuit to positive on the left hand fuel sensor.

That sounds straightforward enough until you follow its directions and check the following 3 items

1) Communication with instrument cluster (this test comes up OK)
2) Rear Sam Module (this comes up fine, have also reprogrammed this, strangely when checking the actual values, both left and right side of the tank show readings which change as vehicle is driven). Also when checking sender via REAR SAM star diagnostics it shows that there is NOT a short to positive, which is conflicting information to the motor electronics ecu.
3) Check Internal CAN for communication errors, (this test also comes up fine)

I'm obviously missing something here, I have no idea what to try next, have tried disconnecting battery to reset gauge, no joy. Everything seems to be OK when interrogating all the units except the motor electronics which shows the above short to positive fault. (current and stored)

Has anybody had anything similar. Or does anyone have any other possible solutions or ways to reset the gauge or try to solve the problem.

Thanks in advance

I have two MLS and its really common problem for the part that goes on top of the fuel tank to go bad. It acts as a pump and also measures the height of the fuel. I think its called a fuel pump or fuel regulator, I can't remember. I think you need to replace that part. Its really annoying because none of the other cars we owned ever had this problem, but it happened already twice on the ML's.

I have a 2007 R350 with the same problem
Did you find a solution to this problem?
Mine started yesterday on a full talk 90 miles into a long trip the gauge dropped to E.
Over the past two days I've driven 800 plus miles filling up every couple of hundred miles stopping and turning the car off and on the gauge still reads E.
Has anyone found a solution?
