Anyone run an R170 steering wheel on their R129? What are your impressions? They are so much cheaper than replacement R129 ones. I was thinking of getting a wood one for my 1998.

Yeah the R129 steering wheels are crazy expensive for some reason. I've been looking for one also.

Got an R170 wheel mounted. I like their leather/wood version. Perfectly matches the burlwood Of the rest of the interior. The leather though was a tad bit dark gray rather than all black.

I put a wood one on my 98 SL500 two years ago I really like it. Simple direct bolt on.

I always thought wood steering wheel looked "cheesy"… until I bought E320, with wood steering wheel... and I absolutely love it.

So, does R170 wheel fit R129 without any issues? Air bag, Horn?

Be sure to get an air bag for it, your 98 SL500 air bag is different shape, wheel bolts rite on, air bag and horn plug in as normal. I like the smaller wheel opening on the lower part of the wheel it's more comfortable on long trips it's the same shape as my 99 Sl600

Great point, definitely get the actual airbag with it. Otherwise, R170 steering wheel is a plug and play on all 1992+ r129. I've used 4 different versions over the years on multiple R129's. Even sportline or elegance W202 fit just fine.

Yup. Noted. I snagged the wheel for $85. Will need to clean it up a little bit but for $85, even if I screw it up, I’m not out an arm and a leg. I’ll make sure to get a matching airbag for the wheel. For $85, I could NOT pass it up.

Does R170 wood/leather wheel come in any other color than black leather and (whatever) wood? I couldn't find any other options.

I'm trying to picture how that would fit my interior. My original steering wheel matches the dashboard… not sure how introducing another combination would actually look? I don't need new steering wheel but smaller wheel size and wood is tempting… as long as it doesn't look out of place.

Also, has anybody used this place? Bit more expensive, but they claim to match original quality, wood leather… color.

My interior looks like this.
