Greetings, I gave Mom a 91SL 500 in 2001. As parents could no longer afford the ongoing restoration, I just got it back for my 15yr old who just got his permit. In the last 12 months we have spent over 20k. New - Radiator, Power Steering pump, front bushings, almost entire exhaust and front end suspension, all 4 top lifters, seat bushings, wheel bearings, motor and transmission mounts, Oil Level Sensor, Self Levelling Valve, control arm bushings and new Tires.

Remaining Problems: 1. The ADS light now comes on and stays on - (was fine before I took to the shop) - They must have done something while trying to fix the fact that the left turn signal causes the seat belt light and all the warning lights to falsh for one second. 2. The Key fob does not work and the driver door cannot be locked either with the key or manual switch on the door - This also occurred while in the shop. 3. They fancy center rear view mirror still works off the control switch but is loose and shakes around when you hit a bump.

On the plus side the car has only 89k miles, the body, tops, and interior are in great shape and the engine and tranny seem to be perfect (the 4 speed bumps when it shifts but I think this is normal. _

I seek advice on the three remaing issues and whether to keep the car or abandon on Craigs List. What can I expect in the future? Thanks

Yikes ! Would you like to adopt ? That's quite a car for a 15 year old in terms of money spent ! Hope that pans out !:D

You can also adopt him, as he gave it to his Mom first.

Cool ! It's always good to have options ! I'm glad another SL has had new life breathed in it, but Im not sure I'd be happy about a 16 year old driving one ! You know it won't be long before either he or a buddy decides to see if it really will do 160 ! No good will come of that !

I would be talking to the shop to fix it as it was ok before they had it,did they let the battery go down and then jump start it ,if so OVP fuse may have blown and caused the lights on the dash or the ignition switch needs changing

kschatzle hello and welcome in our big and international friendly family:). Please update your profile with your car, year and location to help us help you in the best and quickest possible way. For us it’s extremely important you do this.

Honestly I second what monkeymerc says since it was working before it went to the shop.

Good luck with your car :).

Cheers.

16 Year old in SL - Electrical Problems

Thanks for all the replies, Since the car was free to me I went against the advice of my girfriend and took it too the shop, - I always wanted a 68 Camaro as a kid and got a old Impala instead, next thing I knew I was committed and making big investments, I would much rather have my son in an older C class all though the governemt safety retings were not that great for the C. My folks put so much money in it I had figured it was good to go, First the bill is 5k, then, 6.5k and finally 8.5k and still going.

Any help from anyone on the solution to the electrical problems? The mechanics originally tore the thing apart looking for the cause of the seat belt light coming on every time there is a left turn and turn signal combination. When thy put it back together the ADS light is on. Also for some strange reason the driver door lock stopped working.

I have the exact same issue with my 91 500 SL. The turn signal occasionally makes all idiot lights flash like they do when you start the car. I took it to the German Car Specialist, an independent in Bellevue WA, and he replaced the multi-function turn signal control. It fixed the problem for about six weeks. Now its back and at least once turning on the head lights everything light up. I loath to take it back because of the expense so am living with it for now...

Gentlemen, most problems start with the fuses.
Clean the fuse posts, replace all the fuses, preferable with copper ones.

I too am a fairly new owner of an SL500, 1992, R129. Tan or a yellowish interior color...(hard to find replacement parts for the interior) as I was told, there was not many made with that interior color. I just got a replacement sun visor that matches after months of searching and posting on salvage sites. Back to your problems, YES, I too thought I was getting a really good deal on the car after looking for one for 2 years. LIVE AND LERN! There was a reason the car was such a deal, it started off with 20 problems that escalated into about 50. I thought that by saving the additional money I would reinvest it back into the SL500...WRONG AND WRONG. I had no idea that parts for that car were so expensive, not to mention labor. Thank god I have my own personal mechanic, and now after a long time, with with Speedy Lube for all my service work, except for the real technical problems that need the Mercedes dealership and their million dollar analyzers, as well as mechanics who have worked on Mercedes Benz for 15 years or longer. Sometimes even the dealership gets into trouble. One of my major problems was the slow idle would just stop and kill the engine unless I was Speeding up or pumped the accelerator fast and hard to make the idle work at stops, slow turns or just decelerating at times. They were so sure they could fix it in a day or two, they gave me their rental for free and dropped the price 10%. They had my car for 9 days!. BUT, when I picked it up and drove home it was like a new car and has not failed or had problems yet. 2 new parts totaling 684.00 plus labor brought the bill to 1300.00. Another past problem that I have to get fixed soon, and was a problem disclosed by the car lot, all my gauges on my gauge cluster are off! They don't read what is really happening; i.e....speed-odometer is reading half of the speed I am traveling at, the oil pressure is maxed out..unless I slow down and come to a stop, clock is broken, temperature gauge seems ok, it reads about 80 degrees C to about 93 C in hot weather. I NEED TO FIX THE SPEED ODOMETER AND OIL PRESSURE READINGS, IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT TO LOOK FOR OR WHAT NEEDS REPLACING, PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE A TRIP TO THE DEALER! The first thing i did was to pay 280.00 to have all the gauges calibrated and replaced if necessary, so I know those are working, but they are not getting the correct signals or feedback to give an accurate reading.
I have basically rebuilt the whole front end with quality OEM parts, through the speedy lube shop. That was about 2650.00 for a major tune up, coolant flush, transmission flush and new filter, brakes and rotors ALL AROUND, timing chain, front struts, new ball joints and arms, and finally some missing black plastic parts for the air flow intake? ALL that work at the dealership was quoted to me for over 4000.00! Just last week I had the break fluid flushed because it was black and broken down. They don't flush the break system for a break replacement job, and bad fluid can ruin your whole system. I also had the hard rubber stops on the top side of the front struts replaced...mine were splitting and all cracked. I was told they could shoot up into the hood very hard and you would have to replace your whole hood, unless you like two big lumps on each side of the front hood. GET THIS!....another mechanic did the replacement of the top rubber holders, not my guy because they had him busy doing something else. The mech took a short cut and compressed the parts BEFORE HE PUT THEM IN, by doing so he ruined both OEM struts!!! They just re-fixed it for free of course. They have a one year warranty on parts and labor. There are a lot of things I still have to have checked and fixed, I have no cruise control, my hard top won't unlock...(so they showed me how to do it manually with a special wrench, 25 bucks) sometimes it does work, it's hit and miss, same with the soft top. The A/C needs recharging...hopefully!, gauges need to work in sync, and the back end sway bar leveling system needs new switches at a hundred a piece, and its hydraulic system for leveling needs to be looked at and checked. Lastly, FYI FOR EVERYONE WITH A 1992 SL500, the front bumper will crack and split into 2 pieces right at the small grill piece, in front of the bumper/scoop, that covers the towing hook behind it. Mine cracked twice because I never remembered to STAY AWAY FROM PARKING STOPS AND CURBS, so the bumper hits into the concrete pieces and splits there at its weakest point! My mechanic took the bumper off tonight and will repair it right, by using some alum flat plate and screwing both sides together, grinding off the screws sticking out of the front and bonding (bondo) the crack, smoothing it all out and painting it. 300 hundred to 600 at local body shop prices with no guarantee. These cars are expensive no matter what, and some of my friends who paid more for the car thinking less trouble, have had a lot of sensors and major parts go out. So it may not have really mattered in my case. At least I know what's being done and I wanted this car to work on and fix up for detail as my hobby. Good luck to all of you, and it's a pleasure being part of this forum. I have saved money and learned a lot of information about my SL500. Feel free to email me about any problems you might be having, because I have not listed everything that's happening or what I'm working on.

I have that same color interior. Parts.com matches the color automatically based on my VIN. No issues so far and their all OEM parts shipped from Germany. Good prices too.
