Re: sl 129 soft top replacement

I just replaced my rear portion of the soft top. They come in two pieces. The MB part comes only without inner headliner. If this is important to you you may consider replacing with aftermarket. I do not suggest replacing yourself. I sent to an uphostery shop and the book calls for 10 hours to replace rear section, and the shop took 14 hours.

Re: sl 129 soft top replacement

I only replaced the back half as the rear windows were already cloudy yet the front half was in very good shape. I was concerned that the color may not match since the front half had been exposed to the sun for quite a while, but there was no difference. I paid about $750 for the part (I used aftermarket product as the original MB part did not have a headliner like the original I had on the car. The labor was $650.00 ($65 for 10 Hrs).

window replacement in cali

Hey what's up guy? I did not have the heart to answer the guy in New York who had his rear windows replaced for $650.00, that's about $400.00 more when you are ready, contact California Auto Upholstery, 14333 Commerce Dr. Garden Grove ca. 714-554-9072. I had my whole top replaced for $900.00, they did a great job.

I have a friend who is driving from no. cali to have all three windows done for $250.00

good luck!! for that price you may as well have it done now

Soft Top Replacement

The windows in my soft top are starting to split on the sides and as a result, water comes in. I'd like to replace the back part of the soft top. Can anyone give me any advice on going with an aftermarket versus an authentic MB? Which is better and/or lasts longer?

RE: Soft Top Replacement

Go with the MB's, they cost a bit more (well, actually a lot more [:(]) but they are better. There are some parts that can't be aftermarket's.

I once bought an aftermarket top for my 95' but dealer refused to install because they said it wouldn't fit.

Anyway, the rear window part sold about $1k at the dealer plus installation labor.

RE: Soft Top Replacement

Sure dialer refuses to install not original part.

I would go with an aftermarkert part. It may be very same material with original part. The star logo doubles the price.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled my SL '96's soft top by myself because of broken window plastic.

It cost $100 for me to buy a new large plastic back window. Upholstery shop guy gave a bottle of proper glue for free. Very good deal. That was done in San Jose, CA which is not cheap area.

Typical offer for the soft window replacement was between $300 and $400. Just take a telephone yellow pages and keep calling around.

Soft top uninstallation with figuring out what to do took two hours. I made very good notes about what I'm doing and which order to put parts back.

Mercedes is designed with a good engineering and common sense, so all screws are pretty easy to find. Unmounting glued parts were hardest moments.

Putting soft top back was harder. It took four hours. It is always easier to destroy than build.

After all, one repair shop guy checked my result and he said "very good for a first time" without instructions". Both sides near 'back seat' windows were a littlebit loose because I started to run out of glue and I lost focus.

Anyway, saving about $1400 and seeing own hands results gave great satisfaction.

RE: Soft Top Replacement

The previous owner of one of my cars had the rear windows replaced at an upholstery shop. The old windows were cut-out and new ones sewn in their place. These new windows developed small cracks within a year. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to go with a quality aftermarket supplier.

I bought an interior from Phil and had good experinece with him: http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/slxpertise/myhomepage/business.html. He handles tops too. If you use your cell to call him, be sure you have plenty of spare anytime minutes or are calling off-peak, because Phil loves to talk. Other aftermarket suppliers are World Upholstery and CabrioWorld. And for comparison, I'd get a price from an M-B dealer by calling Caliber Motors. They sell to the public at discount prices.

Finally, there are step-by-step instructions for anyone who wishes to do the replacement themself. There is even a video...

RE: Soft Top Replacement

I had the same problem with my top. I went to an upholstry shop and had the plastic pieces replaced around $260. Looks and work fine now. Did not have to worry about the front and back peices not matching.

RE: Soft Top Replacement

Just had my 96 SL320's top done by Bud's Benz in Atlanta. They use the GAHH top mentioned by Jonathan above. Top looks excellent and Bud's did a solid job with the install. Total cost was $1700 ($850 for the top and $800 for the labor, plus tax). Don't understand the fear of using a non OEM top. My dealer quoted $2500 or so for the two pieces, plus another G for installation. Bud's Benz is their subcontractor for installations (don't know of any dealers that do the installs themselves). Truthfully, GAHH buys the tops from the same mfg as MB does - they just don't have the star in the window. An OEM top doesn't have magic dust sprinkled on it so it works/fits better - it's just another aftermarket part.

Anyway, my $.02

Need new German soft top. Where to Buy ??

Hello, one of our family MB, a 1994 sl 320, black pearl with grey interior needs the original soft top replaced this year. Could any of you please relay the best place to buy a top for this car. I have bought in the past a few for my 107's and the aftermarket place i bought from (rich and famous convertable tops) was great. The aftermarket companies seem to be all around 350-500 dollars for this top plus shipping. Also, would you stay with a black top with the grey interior and rocker panels or go with a grey top ? thanks all, BC[8D]
