Hi all,

I'm almost embarassed to ask this question, but here goes. Recently, I purchased an oil filter for my '95 SL500. Along with the filter, it came with two rubber rings - which go on the cap of the oil filter. But, it also came with a copper washer. The copper washer APPEARS to be a replacement for the oil plug, based on it's size - but there's also a washer on the long bolt that holds the oil cap onto the canister. That particular washer appears larger than the one that came with this filter. So, I'm stumped. Which washer should I replace with the one that came with the new oil filter???

If you drain the oil from the bottom, I'd replace the drain plug one each time.
A hardware store trip can get you one for the top side.

Hi buffalochip,

The copper washer included with the oil filter kit applies to the oil filter housing, the oil pan drain plug washer/gasket is a separate part.

I changed the oil on mine for the first time and it too had a copper washer on the end of the long bolt - above the filter. It made absolutely no sense to me and as far as I could see, did nothing to prevent any leaks - so I left that out when I put the new canister in. One of the washers, of course, is for the drain plug - as to that other one, a mystery to me. Car has been fine without it.

The big rubber O-Ring fits onto the top of the canister lid.
