Remove radio with two special tools - ebay $2.39 for 2 pair
a) unplug antenna
b) unplug orange wire with two lights
c) unplug top multi wire connector - rock left to right while pulling
d) unplug dual multi wire connector
Remove climate control unit with two special tools - same as radio tool
a) unplug large center connector by moving latch down from top
b) unplug small connectior with same latch mechanism
Remove two 5/16" (10mm) bolts at sides of CCU opening
Remove two small Phillips screw from sides of ashtray
Remove gear shift knob by twist and pull down locking nut - knob straight up
Insert keys in ignition to move gear selector lever to D
Wiggle plastic ashtray out - the rear lip is under the console so, fwd/back/side
Remove two phillips screws from metal securing bar that live under the rear lip of the ashtray unit - there may be three screws - I had an empty hole.
From the rear of the console, push the right side to the left and lift - push the left side to the right and lift - not much force is needed to separate the console.
Remove the ring surrounding the gear selector.
The console should now be quite loose - push fwd. and up while lift the console over the gear shift lever. It may be necessary to lift the metal bar that held the two phillips screws and guide it over the gear selector plate.
Assembly is done in the reverse order.

Today I replaced the rear view mirror adjuster knob after removing the control console of a 2000 SL500 per Skiffcap's step-by-step guidance. Here are my photos showing the steps.

Note: I made my own radio removal tools by cutting an old credit card to the right shape following instructions found on YouTube.
