My local shop can't get R12 for my AC anymore.

In which states is R12 still available?

My shop can still do the AC work if I can provide the R12, and I am not about to convert to R134, mainly because it is being phased out as well.

Are there still places where you can get R12, or am I stuck with eBay (or the "informal" market)?

Use R290 in it's place. It's completely compatible with R12 and it's lubricants and cools better than R12. It's in millions of cars in Europe and Asia. I've used it in my 560SEC and a friends 560SL. It's cheap ($2.00/pound). Perhaps you've heard of it by it's generic name - propane.

The ONLY negative is that if you take your car to an AC shop and they find out that R290 is in there, they won't play with it any more. I suggest filling it with R290 yourself and keep it full yourself.

It has not been available here in Canada for quite some time.

It is still available in Washington State however, a short drive away!

Probablemente es muy facil obtenerlo en los estados unidos de Mexico, pero seria problemos con el "US Border Patrol" en la frontera.....

Exactly. Even the good DuPont R12 is still available at reasonable prices in Mexico.

It's not that your shop can't get R-12 anymore, its that they won't.... because it is too expensive. It does not make sense to have that much money tied up in a product that they rarely sell. You can still get R-12 in any state with a license or go online and buy the cans of it or Freeze-12, sign off on the EPA intent to resell form, and sell it to your licensed mechanic for $0.01. Perfectly legal to do.

That was the plan.

Thanks, good to know it works. :)

Another option is to take the test online so that you can be certified to purchase R12. I got mine from IMACA about 4 years ago, and I can just go in and buy a can of R12 anytime I want to.

The license cost a friend of mine only $50 or so. He now legitimately buys R12 wholesale.

It's not worth it unless you are a mechanic. You can get the R12 at wholesale online with an intent to resell and not be out the $50 or the time it takes to do the test and study for it.

My buddy didn't need much study. He is a diesel and electric train mechanic.
He showed me train schematics on electrical, and A/C systems.
Compared to that, the diagram for a car appear like child play.

Don't use the propane. That's just dumb. It's way too explosive and too much of a hazard. Front end accident= massive explosion!!
