My 1972 350SL with the 4.5L V8 has a bent up intake manifold. I was wondering if anyone had fabricated a custom intake with tubing and cone filter in the fender area to sort of function as a cold air intake?

Your guess is as good as mine man. I know nothing about a 560SL cold air setup
Might be worth looking into. Its not a cone air filter but it is ducted to cold air. Another option might be a dual snorkel 126 air cleaner.

D-Jets had narrow throat and air intake snorkel was from the rhs of the car - easily modified to induce cold air laterally from radiator.

Greg in Oz did it

I'm inclined to think that manifold is the same for all iron 450 (D-Jet an K-Jet), difference being from throttle body up to filte housing
