Dear All,
Car is a 1981 300D RHD non-turbo sedan. My car wont shift until redline (although I dont have a tachometer). My Mech checked and said the tranny was shot. He said it should be an easy fix but end out telling me the tranny was totally different between the gasoline and diesel model.

He said it is not cheap to buy the parts to rebuild the tranmission. And it seems not easy to get rebuilt item, nor it is risky to get a used one as the youngest car should be over 25 years old.

So my questions are

1) Is it really hard to source out the parts? or if the parts are that expensive?
2) Is it hard to get a rebuilt unit? Or should I just get a used one?
3) Can I use the parts or swap it with the Turbo one? is it an easy swap?
4) Is it even harder if I want to swap the tranny with a 5SP MT? I guess the 5SP MT parts will be very hard to source? Can I swap with those 280E 5sp? or other model?

I tried to search from the forum and seems not much post mentioned about rebuilding the transmission. Thank you very much for all of your opinions

Not in this country but it depends a bit on which part you need.

Take a look at this link for a parts break down diagram

http://www.ganzeboom.net/images1/ganzeboom/parts/Mercedes/722.0, 722.1, 722.2.pdf

To rebuild my 722.118 I think I paid somewhere in the region 600 euros for the parts. The brake bands were the most expensive bits. I got them from the US of A in the end - cheaper than Holland or Germany - mad but true! If you have broken metal cast parts then you are going to be spending a lot more money.

...

2) Is it hard to get a rebuilt unit? Or should I just get a used one?

...
Not difficult to find either used or rebuilt here - but be warned there is rebuilt and rebuilt - standards differ

...
3) Can I use the parts or swap it with the Turbo one? is it an easy swap?

Effectively no. Most turbo transmissions were 722.3s - though some of the W116s had 722.120s.

You can't swap parts between a 722.1 and a 722.3

You can, however, fit a 722.303 or a 722.315 to your OM617 engine though you'll be arsing about with shift points. The best bet I think is to repair or fix what you have...

...more about that later once I've finished answering your questions

That was quite a fad - To change from automatic to manual transmission... do a search for that there's loads of information here, on peach parts, and superturbodiesel.com for that option.

Essentially you need a different flywheel that is heavier quite rare and expensive to obtain. Then you need to pay a lot of money for a Getrag 5 speed gearbox that will probably need a rebuild. The ZF 4 speed boxes generally last longer.

Well here's my offering

722.118 Automatic transmission rebuild (Monster DIY) - PeachParts Mercedes ShopForum

BUT

STOP!!!

BEFORE
you go any further try adjusting your transmission.

It will probably be a vacuum related problem.

Thank you very much guys for the information!!!
OK, I brought the car to two different mech and they said the tranmission was shot. One of them said he fixed the vaccum leak. The car was in the shop for months and my mech said he is trying to find a better option as the parts are very expensive. I think he did mentioned THE BANDS which i think may be referred to the brake bands, he said there were two and will cost USD1000 alone for parts.

So in this case I guess I am pretty doomed and should ask the mech to rebuild the tranny...

thx again!

If it shifts normally, but only at the highest rpm, it is either a vacuum leak/disconnected vacuum line, or the kickdown switch is stuck. If the bands are broken, the transmission will not shift or transfer power at all.

In addition to Govert's comments I'll say that if the brake bands are slipping on the drums because most or all of the friction material is gone then you are looking at a very expensive rebuild because the chance that the brake drums are undamaged in this scenario is small. If you think the brake bands are expensive have a look at the prices for the drums at the dealer (if you can still get them).

I think you will probably do a better job finding cheaper brake bands than your mechanic(s) because you can invest more time to search for them. I too could quite easily have paid 1000USD for a set of three brake bands but I didn't! I looked far and wide for the best deal I could get.

If I'd charged myself 50 euros an hour to find them however it would have been cheaper to pay the 1000USD...

I have no idea. the car wont shift or once it shift, it had a big "band" and feel like someone give my butt a kick. so i am not sure if it is only related to vaccum or something else.

anyway i will check with the mech again and let you guys know
