Why do we to park on driveways yet we drive on parkways?

Which 'Parkway' are you talking about in the U.S. ? There are only roads, streets, highways, blvds according to my recollection. Sounds like its time for you to go back Home to the U.K.

Merritt Parkway - Connecticut
Garden State Parkway - New Jersey
Cross Island Parkway - New York
While some of these are indeed in a an area once known as “New England” (New Belgium before England stole the region), they are definitively within the borders of the United States today.

US99 "Grand PARKWAY" which encircles most of Houston immediately springs to mind. In England we call them "motorways" or such like, and I cannot think of one ParkWAY (Park LANE. Park STREET, etc. are quite common).
