My grandfathers '04 Toyota turns out to have the same sudden acceleration defect that the new ones do and scared the living daylights out of him on Sunday morning. My family decided that the car is too dangerous for him to be driving, and so we're getting him something different. Our first inclination, of course, was a Mercedes. I went on craigslist and found an extremely clean, dealer maintained, 2002 C320 with the 5-speed automatic and 67,000 miles for $11,500.

My mother is concerned about the fact that it's a 10 year old car, which in my opinion is unfounded. The problem is, though, we've had zero experience with a Mercedes newer than 1993. Basically we want a car that is safe, comfortable, moderately economical, and above all else reliable. Multi-thousand dollar trips to the dealer are not an option. I figured I should ask those who know best, how well does these cars fit the our criteria?

I have an '03, bought used from a dealer. I have had no major problems as of now. Unless you have a competent mechanic who knows MB's the dealer could soak you for a lot of money for parts and service. bear in mind the repairs can be costly.

(Sorry, I did not notice you have experience with Benzes, so you know about the dealers!)

There is almost no difference between the C320 and C240. Other than optional equipment that may come standard on the C320, like power seats, full control dual zone A/C, etc., the cars are identical. In fact, the engines are the same, except the C240 uses a "detuned" shorter stroke 2.6l version of the M112 where the C320 uses a 3.2l version. Both engines are solid workhorses. Given the choice, I'd go with the C320 - you don't lose much in MPG, but gain a bit in HP.

Yes, that extra equipment in the C320 can sometimes cause extra problems, but nothing major if you are decent DIY mechanic. Now, if you aren't a good DIYer and are going to rely on a dealer or indy for all your work, my advice is to look elsewhere - maybe a Honda or Nissan.
