hey all im new to this board...my friend and I bought this 1973 450 SEL for a really good deal and I need some help with something. I'm wondering about the driver side exhaust manifold. The one on the car was broken and wasnt fixable. So i was wondering if anyone knew of where i could get one.

See I have one that we bought for $550...used:(...But its still the wrong one. The down pipe is not angled right and hits the gear box. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this little problem here. Thanks

Also here is a picture of the car. hope ya like it

Is the cast iron manifold or the steel headerpipe thats broken? $550 normally buys a couple of 450 parts cars here,I think you paid way too much. is there chance of getting a refund for incorrect parts? .When buying 2nd hand parts always make sure the parts come from a car with a close chassis number to yours so you don't end up with the wrong bits. there are many variations on those cars .

It was the actual iron manifold that was broken. Well im glad I know we got raped for that manifold lol...Thanks for letting me know that. as for getting a refund or anything...I dont think so...the place we went through is usually a buy it and thats it deal....kinda sucks but thats what we got so..oh well. As far as the chassis numbers...what are you talking about? I would imagine you dont mean the VIN do you. Wheres a good place to look for a manifold? Thanks for the help so far

Since it's a 73, there is no VIN, that came about in the early 80's. There should be a tag on the driver side A pillar with a number starting with 116, which is the chassis type. There is also a plate on the rariator support with the chassis number, not VIN, and some option codes. Your car should be a W116.033, the long chassis version.

W116 index: Mercedes-Benz S-Class - 280S, 280SE, 280SEL, 300SD, 350SE, 350SEL, 450SE, 450SEL & 450SEL 6.9

and for your viewing pleasure, the service manual.

Thanks for the websites. lots of good info.

I called a few placed and a dealer as well...They were able to look up the manifold and new they want $935....OUCH!!

I took a few pictures of the manifold that we have, hopefully maybe i can figure out what its really for.

The markings on the manifold are this.

The longer number of the two reads as this: DB1171421901 M0

The smaller number if you can see carefully reads as this: 20.7, 2, 26

It might me helpful if you cleaned the lense or the glass cover on your cellphone. The pics look smeared. Thanks.

Please take a pic of the damaged manifold. These engines are pretty much all the same so other manifolds might work as well. Check the for sale section of MercedesShop - Mercedes Benz Parts and Technical Information of the MBCA fourm site. It's not a Chevy or a FORD so you cant get a set of headers at the corner store.

That looks to me like it came off an American market early W107 SL/SLC (it's marked 1974) , the next type are split in two to prevent cracking and are joined with a stainless steel expander. Why dont you try contacting the place that sold you manifold and explain that it wont fit and will they please exchange it for one that fits. For $550 I would expect a little consideration on their part. if they are on line, send them a link to this discussion. It helps sometimes to remind people of their responsibilities if there is a danger of a little adverse publicity.:-0
Nice looking car BTW.

Thanks for the compliment on the car too. I think once i wheel/ wax her she'll look even better yet.
