Sorry folks, its my first V8 engine and i have a couple of questions.

1- I brought the crank to TDC. The timing marks on the camshaft lined up perfectly, the front pulley is showing 10 degrees, what is that mean ? the car has only 30K, is that dangerous?

2- Where does this vacuum line on the WUR go ? i don't see anything unplugged or missing

3- On the driver side there is some kind of loos line under the exhaust what is that ? is it connected to something ?

10 degrees is the limit for stretch, wear. Replace chain, upper guides, tensioner, and cam sprockets. How sure are you about the mileage? It is easy to roll back the odometer. That line on the WUR is just a vent. No idea on the other line.

PS. It is a 450SL not SL 450. What year?

Splendid work Jan, the engine looks very tidy and sounds great! The fuel distributor could be mistaken for a brand new :)

That is one happy kitten purring

The fuel pump pack is not consistent with 1980. in my experience
It will work, nonetheless.
Later iron age cars had a different setup where fuel is not fed through the Accu but rather direct and FuelAccu is connected to the pump outlet via smaller diameter pipe - which assists fuel pressure build up in cold start

I noticed that as well Djenka, I assume the car was built in 1979 and registered in 1980 - I recall the fuel pump package was upgraded between 53,300-54,000 chassis. Mine is 53,271 and has the same setup.

Build and registration dates do not matter in the US. The dealer provides an MSO (Manufacture Statement of Origin) which designates the model year. This document is used to register and title the vehicle. My 560SL with a build date of 10/85 would be registered as a 1986 even if it was sold and registered in November of 1985.

I forgot about the US Federally mandated standardized 17 Digit VIN. The tenth digit designates model year so there is no choice when registering. This began with the 1981 model year.

You are right, the old setting was different, everything was clogged, the metal pipe from the fuel pump to filter and its very expensive to buy, also couldn't find the other dual hose. i checked old posts from member and i found this setting i don't know what is the difference between the 2 settings if you can tell me. the tank was leaking in the trunk to the fuel pump, there was like a tar smelly puddle underneath the rear end.

Excellent post! I am starting to work on my '77 450SL and need to go thru the fuel system as well. Where did you get the new gas tank from?
