If anyone is interested, I have a nephew in Germany who is thinking about selling his 1998 G300TD. It is a short wheel base, leather, webasto etc. Fairly low milage and almost no off road use.
E-mail me for more details

Number of Diesel G's

Just our of my curiosity, I figured out number of every produced diesel G's supposedly civilian use (SWB, LWB and convertible with fixed windshield) based on data in "The Legend Keeps on Driving -25 Years of Mercedes-Benz G-Class-". The calculation may not very accurate.

460 240GD: 7386
460 300GD: 19977
460 250GD: 1837

461 G270CDI: 409
461 290GDT: 1545
461 290GD: 4654

463 G350TD: 4292
463 250GD: 272
463 300GD: 4163
463 G300TD: 2956
463 G270CDI: 1952
463 G400CDI: 3718

Looks like my G350TD was sold pretty well in 6 years. Was premature engine problem found after this "massive" sales?

hey AlanMcR, what were the reg's?

what were the regs on bringing your diesel in to california? If i remember it's not an legal issue so the next question is how much does it actually cost to get them from germany to the point of registration time at the DMV? ...and then, would a '98 still be SVO convertible?

... i really shouldn't be asking these questions... [}:)]

The G300DT models through 1999 should be easy to bring into California. They are nearly identical to the E-class motor. The only substantive difference is that they are OBDI instead of OBDII. My 1996 was federalized without out a hitch even though 1996 was the first year that OBDII was manditory. Perhaps there was some sort of transition period, or diesels had a grandfather clause. The OM606.964 is SVO/WVO compatible. These are basically high performance IDI (old school indirect injection) diesels. Nothing fancy except the 4 valve head and electronic control of the injection pump. The latter feature being primarily for smoke control.

All three of the G300DT's in the US went through G&K in Santa Monica. I hear that Norm Keiser has one for sale.
