Can somebody show me how to latch the door of the ashtray compartment (the one located in front of the shift lever)? It is a 1998 SL500.
It is spring loaded, opens with a slight touch, and seems to be magnetically latched when closed, but I have a hard time latching it close.
I try slamming it, closing with a gentle touch, or pressing it down hard and holding for a while etc but most of the time it doesn't latch.:surrender:
I can do it one time out of 10, but can not repeat it.

Since you don't have same problem and nobody else answered, it kind of indicates there is something wrong with my door. So I just went ahead to pull everything apart, examine them but found nothing broken. Put them back together and it now works.

RKH did you lube it? Probably with age it only needed to be disassembled and reassembled because something there went or lose or expanded in some ways.

Nothing, I just pull it apart and reassemble. Don't know why it works now either.

I had the same thing with my '93 when I took out the centre console, it worked ok before but not after. I just took out the felt covered plastic liner, fiddled around and put it back again and it worked.
