Has anybody done this? I have access to a European 5.0 engine and transmission out of a 1985 500sel which I'm thinking I could pop into my 1984 380sl. I would think it should be fairly straightforward as the electronics should be the same and these cars did come with 5.0 litre engines in Europe.

Also, will AMG tri-y's work in a sl? Somebody I know has a set for sale. Might a (relatively) cheap way to get some more horsepower out of the 5.0 liter engine.

The '84 500SL came stock with Tri Y manifolds (most likely other years also). Depends on what model his are from.

I have no answers. But I have a question.

Is your drive train kaput? Would it be worth selling your 380 and buying a 500?

I do like the idea of the project and would be willing to spend a weekend giving you assistance if it comes to that.

He says AMG though, and would have to confirm by some manner their SL usage.
That is why I said it depends on what model his are from. I also wanted him to know that tri ys were stock. They may not be AMG.

No problem with the current engine other than it smokes a bit when first starting - probably needs the valve guides done as the engine has 144,000 miles on it now.

The only reason I was thinking of doing it was to get a car with a little more vroom.

240 hp and 296 lb torque versus 155 hp and 196 lb torque. Hmmm...
