I have errors 5 and 21 on socket three on my 1995 124 e320 cabriolet. The code indicates "Exhaust gas recirculator faulty" and "Purge switchover valve circuit open or circuit short", respectively.

I need help finding the location of the purge switchover valve. I have a manual that indicates it is in the front right portion of the engine compartment. It looks like it might be mounted on the fender. It is called a "EGR switchover valve" in the manual. Is this the same as the "Purge switchover valve circuit open or circuit short" referred to in the error code 21? I can't find this unit where the manual indicates that it is. Do I need to disassemble anything to get to it?

The switchover valve is the square unit at the picture lower right.

Code 5 generally means you have to clean out the egr tube. It's the three foot tube that snakes behind the engine. The worst deposits are typically within the first few inches of where it connects to the intake manifold.
