I am looking to buy a 1985 300 series, and the owner has no idea if the vehicle is equipped with the California trap oxidizer. How can one determine if it has one?? I am shopping on-line, so I have no way to look under the hood myself.
Also, I've been told to aviod the Calif cars alltogether because of the problems associated with the trap oxidizer. Any comments???

my understanding is that there were no trap oxidizers on 123's the one's that were installed on 126's need to be removed.

edit:Somebody will know here, but it may be quicker to email the dealership.

I think the CA versions had the trap oxidizers in 1985. Call 1-800-FOR-MERC(EDES), give them your VIN number and ask them. They will know if it had one and whether or not it had been removed.

I've also heard to avoid the 123's with the air cleaner up front in the engine compartment
