'01E430: I had to have one of my keys replaced. It was ordered by my dealer. All I gave them was my VIN (at least I think so) and when the new key came back, it was programmed to function EXACTLY like my good key - not like the one I was replacing. How did MB know to do this??? Is this just coincidence or does the SOS system track vehicle functioning also??? Pretty scary!!!

That is all they need, the VIN...any other information on the car is kept in a database in the Mercedes computer systems. This is the same way they can look up other part numbers, the motor number, etc. without ever looking at the car.
